After discussion and exchanging ideas in several sessions with special education specialists coming from around the world at the Global Education Skill Forum in Dubai UAE, I included in some of the items already proposed to MOE. The things I recommend involve some major changes in the form of policies and the implementation of Special Education in Malaysia. Here I share some of these opinions:
1. To look at the need for IEP to perform a major change, it is necessary that time and IEP sessions be implemented in practical form. It's time to see the IEP in the Timetable. This will involve major changes in the Education Policy and the Need to issue a new SPI that sees the practical needs of IEP. In contrast with the usual practice of inserting RPIs in student's eyes. I (read high impact journals) who see a failure in terms of practical RPI. Therefore, I would like to suggest that this IEP is created in a timetable and Practical session for some of the requirements being carried out during the lesson more specifically. Although it will involve many major changes from the usual practice, discussions on pupil's deed are more important than the hard-to-understand practice. The education community should propose these changes more openly as the studies conducted demonstrate Practical IEP only on paper. More detailed discussion I have included in my FB Official.
2. I like to explain about the need for Therapy. Therapy performed at the therapy center or at the hospital requires continuity at school and at home. Logically, teachers do not have the skills or qualifications to practice. But this can be changed by training teachers on follow-up therapies that can be carried out at school. Yes, there is no subject of therapy. But this is a new idea and I'm sure it will be welcomed by the community if it is run in government schools. Teachers need to receive training from therapists and special sessions created in the timetable are given room for therapy to be continued. Understand that the number of receiving therapists is high and long intervals. This change will involve basic policy change, SPI and practical new knowledge but not impossible to implement.
3. The scheduling system and the allocation of subjects have not been trending in developed countries. So I like to explain and give you a thought. Existing subjects in the curriculum allocation need to be given new breath and the curriculum-oriented and cross-section aspects are given practical opportunities. For example, a literacy subject is created over BM and BI and is carried out in the form of cross-disciplinary courses. Likewise with mathematics and others like PI and Moral. Longer allocation of time and the implementation of Joint Teaching must be carried out to demonstrate success in a larger percentage.
4. Practical education Inclusive is given new breath. Creating greater space for social inclusion practices involving pupils outside the school boundary for pupils who have been trained in inclusive classes and PPKI classes, this group provides practical time outside of teachers as guards. For example, students are given the responsibility to carry out the purchase of personal needs at supermarkets. This is implemented more structurally, not as an existing practice that is through periodic special programs. It needs to be in the table and every development is evaluated by the teacher. Empowerment is given to teachers for implementation purposes. The school authority is implemented and is bound to involve major changes in educational policies and SPI requirements for the determinant power that the teacher decides
