🌍 From classroom to crisis response 🌍

Meet Camille Schuetze, a graduate of the MSc International Disaster Management at the University of Manchester (Class of 2025).

One of the things that drew Camille to the programme was its international perspective on emergencies and disasters, and what really stood out was the opportunity to carry out fieldwork and learn directly from visiting professors and expert lecturers throughout the course.

That experience helped Camille pivot into the emergency management job market, and she’s now stepping into a role as an Emergency Management Coordinator for a local municipality 👏

If you’re considering a master’s that combines theory, practice, and real-world relevance, this programme offers a strong foundation in the ideas and frameworks that underpin disaster management and disaster studies worldwide.

🔍 New Policy Brief Alert!

“Learning from Impact Bond Pilots in Humanitarian and Displacement Contexts” by Laila Zulkaphil

Humanitarian needs are rising, yet funding is declining, prompting the sector to explore innovative financing solutions.

This brief reviews two pioneering pilots and what they reveal.

Key takeaways:
✨ Impact bonds can boost flexibility, adaptive management, and longer timelines.
⚠️They often don’t bring in new funding when traditional donors act as outcome funders.
📊They don’t necessarily outperform simpler, cheaper models.

The brief recommends considering options like payment-by-results or flexible multi-year grants first, and using outcome metrics to truly measure impact on affected populations.
