You are most warmly invited to Christian Laes's inaugural lecture as Professor of Ancient History in the University of Manchester on Wednesday 27 March at 5pm, in the Lecture Theatre, Samuel Alexander Building:
"A Roman graffito, a Neo-Latin poem, and the history of childhood in antiquity:
why a classicist and ancient historian should embrace a wide array of sources"
Presenting and analysing the poem Paedagogium (1903) by Giovanni Pascoli, Professor Laes will make a plea for Altertumswissenschaft. Combining archaeology, epigraphy and literary evidence, this poem offers revealing information on the history of childhood in Antiquity and the possibilities of writing such history.
