Happy Birthday to our Big Bear

With everything that is currently going on across the world it is easy to lose sight of the bigger picture.

On this day as always, our thoughts are with our American families and friends and all of those whose lives were changed forever in the 9/11 attacks.

Despite the horror, the tragedy and the pain endured by so so many, stories like that of Welles Crowther serve to remind us all of the strength, resilience and compassion in human nature.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.”

At LACROSSETHEPOND, nothing is more important to us than the safety and wellbeing of our students.

With the current COVID-19 global pandemic, our partner universities have moved to provide online and distance-learning activities for the foreseeable future which allows our students to complete their class schedules and projects remotely.

Many of our students have made the understandable decision to travel home whilst others have decided to remain in The UK. Where students have remained in The UK, we are working closely with them individually to ensure that they are safe and to give them our full support for anything they may need. With us working remotely, we are able to provide a 24/7 response service and can assist with anything from travel requirements and advice to dealing with any medical requirements should they arise.

We look forward to welcoming our entire student base back to The UK when appropriate and safe to do so but in the meantime, hope that everyone and their families continue to stay safe, stay healthy and stay positive.

With help from Laurel Presbyterian Church, we will be streaming a live feed from Zach’s funeral service back home in Maryland so his teammates and friends in The UK can join in the celebration of Zach’s life and pay our respects to our lost brother.

Our service will be held in the upstairs room at Poynton Baptist Church, Park Lane, Poynton and will start at 3:45 PM. All and any are welcome and encouraged to attend should they wish to do.

Attendees should park at Poynton Sports Club and make the short walk over to the church for the service after which we point we will raise a glass to Zach’s memory back at Poynton Sports Club.

To all those whose lives Zach touched and all who he inspired, we are here for you all.

With Love, Team LTP

Everyone at Lacrosse The Pond is devastated to hear of the sudden and tragic passing of current LTP student Zachary Darnell.

Despite Zach only having been in The UK for the past few months, he leaves behind a gaping hole in all of our hearts as well as all of those who were fortunate enough to spend time with him.

A big friendly giant of a man with an even bigger heart, Zach impacted positively upon everyone he met during his time here and will be sorely missed by all who came into contact with his bright, warm and infectious personality.

The picture we have chosen to share sums Zach up perfectly. When we delivered a junior clinic back in September, one of the attendees had unfortunately injured himself before the session and wasn’t able to fully participate. On seeing young Eddie on his crutches, Zach spent time with him one-on-one before gifting him a brand new lacrosse head. Afterwards, Zach then reached out to Eddie's parents to arrange having a shaft sent out to them also. This act of selflessness is typical of Zach’s truly generous nature - spreading joy and positivity and by doing so, inspiring others along the way all the while wearing a huge grin on his face.

Zach’s passing leaves a hole bigger than the short time he spent in The UK and he will be sorely missed by all at Lacrosse The Pond as well as his lacrosse brothers and sisters at Manchester Metropolitan University and Wilmslow Lacrosse Club with whom he forged countless friendships and made many more memories.

All of our thoughts and hearts go out to Zach’s family and friends throughout this tragic time and we hope that the wider lacrosse community can pull together to help ease the pain everyone will undoubtedly be feeling.

Sleep well Big Bear.
