All universities make high-stakes decisions when admitting international students and understanding what English language tests can really measure their proficiency in academic settings.
Here, I highlight five key questions every institution must ask before accepting a proficiency test for admission purposes.

1. Is the test backed by independent research?
Validity and reliability should ensure that test takers’ scores reflect real academic ability.

2. How are speaking and writing assessed?
Productive skills are crucial for success. Tests must include authentic tasks like essays, discussions, and presentations not just objective items.

3. Do the test tasks align with actual academic demands?
Different disciplines require different language skills. Admissions policies should reflect real classroom and assessment practices.

4. What security measures protect score integrity?
Robust security before, during, and after testing safeguards fairness and institutional reputation.

5. Are marking criteria transparent?
Clear, accessible scoring descriptors help universities understand what test scores truly represent.

The bottom line is proper admission tests lead to better decisions, better-prepared students, and stronger institutional outcomes. All admission tests must provide the transparency, research evidence, and academic alignment needed to support their goals, and universities mustn’t compromise these principles.

With major English proficiency tests like TOEFL, Duolingo, and PTE significantly reducing their test session times, an important question emerges: should IELTS consider doing the same? As candidates increasingly seek efficient, streamlined testing experiences—without compromising reliability or validity—shorter exams are becoming the norm in the industry. If IELTS wants to remain competitive and responsive to evolving test-taker needs, perhaps it’s time to reassess the traditional format and explore smarter, more time-effective approaches.
