Manchester High School for Girls MHSG is a leading independent girls' day school in South Manchester, for ages 3 to 18.

Manchester High School for Girls was founded in 1874 “To impart to the girls the very best education which can be given and to fit them for any future which may be before them”. Today, the School upholds these founding principles by encouraging each individual pupil to achieve educational excellence across a broad range of learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. For each pupil, this all-round education fosters an awareness of their own value and a sense of responsibility towards others, both within our community and across the wider world.

Cross Country and Netball Success🏃‍♀️

The U13 Netball Squad played in the B festival, and played brilliantly, coming 3rd out of 15 Teams!

Yesterday, the Year 5 & 6 cross country team attended the AJIS cross country competition held at Rossall School.

A special congratulations to the Year 5s who won the team competition, and Aaliyah in Year 5 who came 3rd individually.

A huge congratulations to everybody 🏆👏

A Dual Perspective👏

Our Head Girl Team were invited over to , to deliver a discussion alongside MGS’ Captaincy, and Wellbeing Officer.

‘A Dual Perspective’ was a discussion on language, society, social media and gender pressures, which was delivered to the Year 9 students.

Each student involved delivered their perspectives with confidence, making strong and thought-provoking points.

The MHSG Tennis Team in 1899 🎾

This week’s ‘Tale from the Archive’ coincides with National Sporting Heritage Day which is celebrated on 30 September. The Lancashire Girls’ Schools Lawn Tennis League was founded in November 1894 by representatives of thirteen Lancashire schools, and the first meeting was held at Manchester High. The MHSG tennis team won the first tournament in 1895.

Tennis was the first game played on the asphalt courts at the back of the School’s first home in Oxford Road. It was regarded as suitable for girls because it allowed them to dress in a feminine manner; it was not played in a vigorous way and therefore preserved a woman’s decorum. Finally, tennis parties were often social occasions as part of a family’s recreation.

The photo shows the tennis team in 1899 after they had won the Lancashire Girls’ Schools Lawn Tennis League shield for the second time.
