MHSG is a leading independent girls' day school in South Manchester, for ages 3 to 18.

Manchester High School for Girls was founded in 1874 “To impart to the girls the very best education which can be given and to fit them for any future which may be before them”. Today, the School upholds these founding principles by encouraging each individual pupil to achieve educational excellence across a broad range of learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. Yesterday our J6 A Level Politics and History students headed to London to visit the Houses of Parliament and the Supreme Court! The trip formed part of the students' studies of the UK's constitutional framework, combining their classroom curriculum with real-world experience.

During their tour of the historic buildings, the group had the opportunity to gain insight into the day to day workings of the UK's legislature, finishing the day with a snap election role play. They even bumped into Sir Gavin Williamson MP, who stopped to answer a few questions and take a selfie! A fascinating trip, enabling our J6 students to delve deeper into their studies.

Manchester High School for Girls visits Edinburgh! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 On Monday we were delighted to reconnect with some MHSG alumnae in the Scottish capital during an informal drinks evening hosted by our Head Mistress, Helen Jeys, and Head of Fundraising and Alumnae Manager, Ellie Horrigan.

Alumnae from across the years united, from as recent as 2018 to as far back as 1951, joining from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife and beyond. It was so wonderful to see connections being made and friendships forged across the generations – with many alumnae making plans to arrange further meetings amongst themselves in the future!

If you're interested in helping organise, or attending, an alumnae event please contact our Development Team: [email protected]

In the last week before half term, our Year 7 and 8 rounders teams headed to St Bedes College for a friendly match!

Although both teams narrowly lost, they were very well fought matches, with both teams showcasing fantastic skill, energy, teamwork and sportsmanship, doing MHSG proud. Well done players! ⭐

Votes for Women, War Heroes and Trailblazers! 📖🎧🎙️Our Archivists, Mrs Hobson and Mrs Roberts, were recently asked by SDS to contribute to a series of podcasts exploring some of the most remarkable school archives in the country. SDS are major sponsors of the School Archives and Records Association of which we are members, and they are responsible for creating our digital archives website and MHSG Times.

The episode covers the School’s earliest beginnings to its significant role in the Votes for Women movement. It also explores the School's experiences during both the First and Second World Wars, including the evacuation of pupils, highlighting the girls' contributions to the war effort and the inspiring stories of former pupils and staff who served their country in a variety of remarkable roles. The achievements of these extraordinary women continue to inspire us today.

This is much more than the story of a school archive - it's a journey through social history, education, women's rights, wartime resilience, and the lives of generations of young women who helped shape the world around them.

🎙️Search 'Tales from the Archive' on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. Or listen directly on the SDS Tales from the Archive website: https://tinyurl.com/3x3se56h
