I teach flute, piano and music theory from my home in Stockport. I graduated from The University of Manchester in 1999 with a Mus(Hons) and studied for a PGCE two years later. More recently (2019), I completed a Masters in Musicology, also at the University of Manchester.​​ I have taught music in schools and privately from home for 20+ years. I teach students of a variety of ages, from 5 to around 63 (I'm too polite to ask!) and cater for all abilities from beginner to advanced. I have an enhanced DBS certificate and have completed several first aid and child welfare courses over the years. I am more than happy to assist you in achieving the best grades possible; I have many years of experience in preparing students in all grades for both ABRSM and Trinity exam boards. Others prefer to progress without taking any exams at all, focusing on alternative ambitions. Either approach is absolutely fine by me. I also help to prepare students for GCSE and A-level examinations (both practical and theoretical elements) , graded theory exams, auditions for various music colleges and performance diplomas.

If you’re going to learn about complex musical concepts such as chord structure, chord progressions, key changes, harmonisation of a melody, etc you’ve got to enjoy it so why not get a bit of Taylor Swift on the go and see what you can do!

It has never been more convenient to take your grade 5 theory exam since the exam process for grades 1 - 5 have moved online and can be taken pretty much whenever you are ready.

My online course will enable you to answer questions on:

🎼 Keys & Scales (F #/Gb major and D #/Eb minor; all keys and scales for Grade 5; helpful patterns: Key signature chart)
🎼 Rhythm (simple and compound time, irregular time signatures, grouping in irregular time signatures, quintuplets and sextuplets)
🎼 Pitch - (The tenor clef, transposing at an octave between clefs)
🎼 Pitch - (Transposing by a major 2nd, minor 3rd and perfect 5th; finding the new key signature; transposing melodies with accidentals; transposing instruments)
