If parenting sometimes feels like you’re stuck in the same cycle of conflict, overwhelm and power struggles, you’re not alone.

You can understand your child deeply and still find yourself wondering:

“Why does everything have to become a battle?”
“How do I hold a boundary without damaging our connection?”
“How do I support my child when their nervous system is overwhelmed?”

My Small Group Therapeutic Coaching for Parents is a warm, reflective space to explore exactly this — alongside a small group of other parents who understand.

Across 6 sessions, we’ll explore:

🌿 Understanding the nervous system
🌿 Reducing conflict and power struggles
🌿 Moving from compliance towards collaboration
🌿 Developing boundaries that support safety and connection
🌿 Understanding what sits underneath behaviour
🌿 Finding approaches that work with your child, rather than against them

This isn’t about becoming a “perfect” parent or adding another list of things you should be doing.

It’s about developing a deeper understanding of yourself and your child, so that you can find more moments of connection, safety and collaboration.

✨ 6 weekly sessions
✨ Starting Thursday 10th September, 1:30–2:30pm
✨ Maximum 5 places
✨ £197 for all 6 sessions

If this is something you are interested in you can email me at [email protected] to book your place or join the wait list for the next group.

Places are intentionally limited to keep the group small, safe and genuinely reflective.

There were mornings when we made it through the school gates and, for a moment, it felt like we’d achieved what everybody had been working towards.

She was in school.

But the problem wasn’t fixed.

Because the things making school so difficult were still waiting on the other side of those gates.

She was frightened. There were changes she couldn’t predict, new staff she didn’t know and expectations she struggled to meet. Even her uniform was itchy and uncomfortable.

And then there was the approach.

The SENCO’s approach towards her was incredibly brutal and showed so little understanding of what was actually happening underneath her behaviour.

Eventually, adjustments were made.

She was allowed to wear her PE kit. Her timetable was reduced. Different things were tried to make getting her into school easier.

And sometimes they worked.

We got through the gates.

But we were making adjustments around the edges without changing the things at the centre.

The environment hadn’t fundamentally changed. The demands hadn’t disappeared. And the approach towards her hadn’t changed enough either.

A reduced timetable meant fewer hours in an environment she couldn’t cope with.

It didn’t necessarily make that environment feel safer.

And getting her through the school gates proved only one thing.

That we’d managed to get her through the school gates.

It didn’t tell us what it had taken to get there or how she felt once she was inside.

And it certainly didn’t mean the problem had been fixed.

Looking back, I think we measured progress by the thing everybody could see.

Attendance.

While so much of what actually mattered was happening where nobody could see it.

That’s something I wanted to capture in my new book The School is Lava.

Because getting Liv across the lava isn’t really the answer if the ground still doesn’t feel safe when she gets there.

As children return to school this week, please remember:

Attendance tells us where a child is. It doesn’t necessarily tell us how they are. ❤️

Share this if it resonates with you too!

Time for a reintroduction 🙋‍♀️

I'm Emily Price, an Autistic Speech and Language Therapist based in Greater Manchester. I provide Neurodivergent-Affirming speech and language therapy for children and adults, alongside support for families, schools, and professionals in healthcare and education.

As an Autistic SLT, I bring both clinical expertise and lived experience to my work. I offer a range of services:

💜 Communication assessments (adults and children)
💜 Therapy sessions
💜 Parent advice sessions and consultations
💜 Supervision and training

I predominantly support Autistic children and adults, as well as their parents/caregivers. Appointments are available across Manchester for those in my area - and online throughout the UK.

Some parents may be wondering whether their child could be Autistic. I can support this process by identifying their communication needs and gathering evidence of possible indicators, helping you to navigate conversations with healthcare and education services.

“But she was FINE once she got inside.”

For a long time, that was the reassurance.

She might have struggled to get dressed. Struggled to leave the house. Struggled in the car. Struggled to get across the playground.

But eventually, if we managed to get her through the door, she would settle.

She could talk.
She could laugh.
She could do her work.

So the conclusion was that getting her there had worked.

And I wanted to believe that too.

Because if she was fine once she got inside, surely the anxiety beforehand was something we just needed to help her push through?

Except school didn’t see what happened when she came home.

They didn’t see the meltdowns.

The exhaustion.

How little capacity she had left for anything else.

They saw the part of the day where she was managing.

I saw what it had cost her.

And still, every morning, we started again.

Because at the time, success was measured by whether she made it through those doors.

Looking back, I think we were measuring the wrong thing.

A child being physically present in school doesn’t necessarily mean they feel safe there.

And a child being able to hold everything together until they get home doesn’t mean they’re coping.

Sometimes it means they’ve used absolutely everything they have.

That’s something I wanted to show in The School is Lava.

The adults around Liv can see that the path to school is safe.

But Liv can feel the heat.

And as she says herself in the book after the school speaks to her mum:

“I heard the teacher tell her that I am fine when she is gone, but that’s not true! How do they know how I feel? I have no choice but to hide how scared I am until the school day ends.”

If you’ve ever been told your child is “fine once they’re there”, leave a heart or share this with someone who needs to understand. ❤️

Quite a few years ago now I created an Autistic profile tool document. I’ve had lots of messages and shared posts of people showing me them using it themselves, in classrooms and workshops. It means a lot that something I created has been useful to others. Whilst this version will remain free and available to all on my website still, I wanted to give an update that I am currently working on a small booklet version to make available to order. Hopefully then people can carry around a more compact and smaller document that can be used as a profile passport in a way. Stay tuned :)

Absolutely love this 😂

Recently I was a guest speaker on The Speech Den where I talked about consent in Speech and Language Therapy.

As a patient / client, when I think back to the professionals who helped me the most, it wasn't because they used the best techniques, strategies, or programme - it was because they made disagreement feel safe.

I wasn't looking to have my thinking changed, I wanted someone to understand why I felt the way I did.
