💻 Taking Computer-Based IELTS?
Worried about typing speed and technical tools?
Here are 20 strategies that will make those worries disappear! 👇
🎧 LISTENING — Real-Time Precision
✅ Type your answers directly into the answer box while the audio plays — don't waste time on rough paper
✅ Use the Tab key instead of your mouse to move between answer boxes
✅ Highlight keywords while reading questions — it keeps your focus sharp during the audio
✅ Use the final 2 minutes after the audio to check spelling — especially Plural 's'
✅ Set your volume to a comfortable level before the Listening section begins
📖 READING — Smart Navigation
✅ Passage on the left, questions on the right — make full use of the Split Screen layout
✅ Found something important? Right-click to Highlight it instantly ✅ You can't trace lines with your finger on a screen — practise Skimming with your eyes
✅ Ctrl+F does NOT work in Computer-Based IELTS — train yourself to scan for keywords manually
✅ Don't know an answer? Hit the Review button and move on — come back to it later
✍️ WRITING — Structure & Speed
✅ Use Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V to move sentences around — this is the biggest advantage of the computer format
✅ Word count appears automatically on screen — stop counting words and focus on vocabulary and grammar instead ✅ There is no auto-correct — slow down and type carefully rather than rushing
✅ Never copy directly from the question — use synonyms and paraphrase to show your range ✅ Aim to finish 5 minutes early — use that time purely for proofreading
🎤 SPEAKING — Fluency & Presence
✅ In a video call exam, look directly at the camera lens — not the examiner's face on screen
✅ Don't hold the microphone too close to your mouth — keep it slightly away and speak clearly ✅ In Part 2, use your 1 minute wisely — jot down ideas in bullet points on the paper provided
✅ Don't speak like a robot in front of a screen — use hand gestures and facial expressions to stay natural
✅ If you get stuck, don't say "Umm" — instead say "Actually, I haven't thought about this before, but..."
