Yesterday Russians celebrated Первомáй (PyervomAy) or Пéрвое мáя (PyErvaye MAya)
🤩✨🎉.
It is a Russian public holiday – the first of May.
Russian people 🇷🇺 don`t usually work on this day and a few other following days. ☺️
Many Russians use long May holidays for vacation ✈️🏝️🏕️🏞️or travel. 🛤️🚞🛣️🚗
It is also the time when people go to the countryside or special country houses called dachas (дáчи)🏡 to take care of our gardens after the winter mess😅🙈 and just to relax in the sun ☀️ and eat шашлык 😜(shashlYk - a Russian-style kebab) and other tasty things.
People have picnics 🧺and spend time outdoors with family and friends. 🏕️🏞️
In cities, parks host concerts, fairs, and public performances. 🎫🎡🎢 🎇🎆

From the USSR to Today 🇷🇺🍴: Celebrating the Timeless ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat’ 🥂✨
Part IV.
Our beloved salad was created during the birth of a new country — the USSR. The country no longer exists, the salad’s creator has long been forgotten, and the working class has changed, but the recipe lives on. Remarkably, the recipe has remained almost unchanged. 😲 So, on New Year’s Eve, there’s a reason to raise a toast 🥂🍾 to ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat’ and its creator, Anastas Bogomilov, a fine person. 👏😊✨

The Hidden Meaning Behind ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat’ 🕵️♂️🍽️: A Revolutionary Salad 🍴⚡
Part III.
The salad’s name was not arbitrary but symbolic. “Shuba” (which translates to “fur coat” in Russian) was an acronym, which was popular with the new authorities at the time. It was written on the menu as “SH.U.B.A.” This stood for “Shovinizmu i Upadku — Boykot i Anafema” (To Chauvinism and Decline — Boycott and Anathema). 😲 The new salad was a hit in the capital, and its recipe quickly spread across the country and beyond. Most importantly, his goal was achieved — there were fewer drunken brawls, and his revenues grew even more. People flocked to Bogomilov’s establishments not only to drink but also to taste the new snack-salad. “Herring Under a Fur Coat” was served for the first time on the eve of the 1919 New Year. Over a hundred years ago, visitors first tasted this salad as they welcomed the New Year.

From Drunken Fights to Genius Idea 🍻💥: The Birth of ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat’ 🍽️🐟🥰
Part II.
It was then that Anastas Bogomilov had a brilliant idea. 😃💡✨He decided to create a dish that, after eating, would lessen the effects of alcohol on the brain, slowing down the onset of drunkenness. Fewer drunk fights would mean less damage to his establishments. It was a calculated business decision, nothing personal.
“Би́знес — ничего́ ли́чного.”
“Business, nothing personal.” 🤑💼📈😎
Herring was cheap at the time and loved by the working class, so he chose it as the main ingredient. To complement the herring, he added onions, boiled carrots, beets, and potatoes — staples of the common household. He also generously dressed the salad with mayonnaise.

The Wild Origins of ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat’ 🍽️🎉: A Tale of Revolution and Rebels 🕰️🍷
Part I.
✨✨✨😃👇👇👇 🎣
“Who invented the salad ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat,’ when, and why?”
The creator of this remarkable salad was a merchant named Anastas Bogomilov, who owned numerous popular eateries and taverns in Moscow. During the tumultuous years of the revolution, regular patrons of his establishments often drank heavily and engaged in long debates, usually on the topic of “how to arrange life in Russia.” These discussions often ended in brawls. Not punching an opponent in the face was almost seen as a faux pas. They fought well, with plates being smashed, just as it should be... 🙈

Not So Simple: The Myth Behind ‘Herring Under a Fur Coat’ 🕰️✨”
I used to think, probably like you, that the name of the popular salad «Herring Under a Fur Coat» was simply tied to the salad itself — like herring covered by vegetables, as if «under a fur coat.»
It turns out, though, that it’s not so straightforward; this salad has genuine «proletarian roots» and its own unique and charming legend. 🕰️✨
