Sometimes I’m completely blown away by the completely unexpected but most beautiful interactions that occur in our lives and the higher power that surrounds us.

On the weekend, I had one of these moments. I was travelling back from London after celebrating a family event and as some of you know a late train from London to Manchester on a Saturday night is almost always rammed, completely chaotic and well just short of mental.

Boarding a packed train it seemed everyone had lost their senses and there was no system to get people to their seats. At one point I found I was even standing in the toilet with my suitcase trying to make space for people to get through the carriage and well if you know me you know at some point I was gonna have to speak up and try and be the voice of reason.

I’m so glad I did, because as I took my seat this gorgeous young lady who was sat across the aisle from me thanked me and made me laugh with her comment ‘that she was glad I spoke up because she had wanted to but didn’t want to sound like the loud, rude American’ 😭. Well you know this had me giggling and intrigued and well, as I love conversation, I asked her where she was from. As we spoke she mentioned she co-ran a platform on Insta promoting . I told her I did a similar thing but with global narratives and then she told me her handle and that’s when my mind was blown, because this gorgeous girl Mishika is someone I’ve been following for some time and she is one half of the brilliant platform Brown Girl Bookshelf (BGB) .

As you can imagine the rest of our journey was full of and event chat and the hope of maybe working on something together in the future.

Mishika is hosting the brilliant avni doshi in on the 15th of October. I’ve booked my tickets and inshallah will be there but I would love it if any of my Manchester friends/followers would also book tickets and support her, especially if you’ve loved this little story of how we’ve met but also because we in Manchester need to get behind such events promoting from the .

Events details can be found on the Brown Girl Bookshop page in the bio.

When a love of kidlit, bookstagram and a deep commitment to inclusive books and representation brings you together and then you find out you both work in independents schools, you are bound to hit it off.

Well that’s the story with and I. Finally we could take our friendship beyond DM’s and actually meet. So what better than a mini literary tour of Manchester for a first meet up, where we could delight in gorgeous food, drink and books.
1. for food that slayed
2. for Manchester’s literary heritage and just because it’s a gorgeous space
3. for scale and the
4. for a lovely space and finding authors we love. These are just a few of the spots in the Manchester City of Literature Map.

It was such an honour to be asked to contribute to this special EDI edition of the by the , compiled and edited by the brilliant . Olivia and I connected a few years ago over on X, not a platform I use so much anymore but where I met incredible educators, and book lovers, passionate about representation and good literature.
She was so supportive and encouraging of my work and for that I am so grateful.
It’s because of the good souls I’ve met along the way that I am able to continue to do the work I do behind the scenes with Mirror Me Write.

On the 22nd October, Rebel Book Club Manchester and Mirror Me Write had the pleasure of hosting a Meet the Author event with Nihal Arthanayake .Life

Masterfully chaired by , the event was full of engagement and inspiration.

For those of us in the audience who could remember Nihal in his early days as a DJ for BBC Radio 1, the evening was also steeped in moments of nostalgia.

Centred around discussing Arthanayake’s brilliant and accessible book ‘Let’s Talk- How to have better conversations’, the audience were challenged to interact with each other and their input brought so much of the intimacy to the evening.

‘Let’s Talk’ is so well considered and curated and essentially provides every reader with a tool kit, guide and manifesto, on how to have better interactions.

I think my biggest take away from the night is to be conscious that in every conversation there is an opportunity to learn, share and grow.

I feel so grateful to have been part of such an evening and hope this is just the beginning of brilliant collaborations with Mirror Me Write and

Thank you to for providing the perfect, safe space for our event.

Heartbreaking news, sending love, strength and power to the whole team. you were like a bright light in the Publishing world. A small press commited to and who worked so hard for , and . Some of the best middle grade books I have come across in the last few years, came from you. You brought us , and so so many more brilliant authors. Your loss will be hugely felt but also shows how disgraceful it is that the support just wasn’t there. UK Publishing has shown once again that so much of their chat 5years ago around inclusion was just superficial, their commitment it seems was only ever going to be temporary.
May bigger and brighter things come your way. XxX
