Hard to imagine that Christmas🎄 lights may make some people feel uncomfortable and even unwell isn't it? But they can!

I love Christmas lights and this time of year, but give me static lights that don't flash and change !

Read this below👇 for some enlightening information (pardon the pun !🤭)

When lights hurt, your brain is overwhelmed NOT your eyes, per se. Light sensitivity doesn’t need to be something you have to just ‘deal with’.
We can help you discover how to eliminate the discomfort and calm to the chaos.

This is a brilliant post for helping explain how Irlen symptoms can develop following a brain🧠 injury.

Most of the people I work with have struggled with their symptoms since childhood and are more likely to have Irlen Syndrome due to hereditary factors.

However, this year I’ve supported three clients whose symptoms began only after a fall or a blow to the head. It’s a powerful reminder that Irlen-related difficulties aren’t always lifelong - they can also appear as a direct result of traumatic injury, like whiplash, surgery or a bad fall.

If you or someone you know has experienced visual stress, headaches, reading difficulties, light sensitivity, or unexplained fatigue after a 🤕 head injury, you don’t have to struggle in silence. Support is available and the right colour/s can help.

What a brilliant day in Lytham St Annes!😀

I was welcomed by a fantastic group of 24 people and statistically, at least three or four of them were likely living with Irlen symptoms without even realising it.

No overlays. No props. No fancy tech.

Just me, my stories, and the signs to look out for.
(Plus a celebratory cake 😋🤭!)

Most people in the room had never heard of Irlen Syndrome (nothing new there!), but the best part was watching the lightbulb 💡moments, the nods, the surprised smiles 😀 and those “wait—that’s me!” 😃 expressions as examples began to hit home.

It felt wonderful to be back out in the community, sharing what I love and spreading Irlen awareness again.👍

Clearer with Colour - Irlen Screening I help bring clarity, comfort and confidence to those who need it.

If any of this sounds familiar, or you’re simply curious, reach out and let’s chat. You may just be amazed at what a difference the right colour can make.

Well, would you look at that! 💅📚

I don’t often toot my own horn (okay, maybe just a little trumpet solo now and then 🎺), but it’s high time I stopped playing small and properly celebrated this one!

Last year, I was asked if I’d like to contribute to a book all about female empowerment.

Cue imposter syndrome🫣 whispering “Who, you?”

But I told it to pipe down and said YES! 😃

I shared my story, my journey to becoming an Irlen Screener, and how I’m helping raise awareness in the way I do today.

Fast-forward to now… well, the book only went and hit #1 on Amazon in several categories (!!) and has just been picked up by 📚Waterstones online! 😍

So, if you’re making your Christmas list 📝(or just fancy treating yourself, because you totally deserve it), pop it on there!

And if you’re near MODS optical , Hayley Smith (fellow fabulous contributor) and I would love to sign your copy, or add a little dedication if you’re gifting it this Christmas 🎄💖

Because sometimes, it’s okay to say… I did a thing and it’s pretty blooming amazing! 🌟

🐝 Busy Bee Update!

Hello everyone! 👋 It’s been a little while since I've been here, but I rarely sit still, so no surprise, things have still been buzzing behind the scenes ☺️

I’ve still been out spreading the word about Irlen Syndrome and helping to raise awareness 💙 and I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be the guest speaker at tomorrow's meeting of the Rotary Club of Turton.

It’s always such a pleasure to meet inspiring people, share stories, and keep the conversation going about something so close to my heart.

If you’re around Bromley Cross, come along or send a bit of support as every bit of awareness makes a difference 💪💬

Simply drop an email to Rotarian Andy Todd at [email protected] to enquire about coming. It's £15 and you get a 3 course meal included. You'll learn more about the Rotary Club and what they do too.😀

See you there! 😊

This is exciting news! Especially foe those of us with light sensitivity.

We haven't been imagining those streetlights getting brighter. Hopefully they'll address car headlights next too! (I'm less convinced that fluorescent lights will follow, but I'll celebrate the win! ) 😀

I spotted this in another post and wanted to share it here for you.

👉 "U.K. resident in Barnet just won a landmark case forcing the council to remove toxic LED streetlights after evidence showed their blue light radiation can damage the retina, disrupt sleep, and harm ecosystems by killing insects, birds, and bats. 🦇

Once dismissed as “conspiracy,” the truth now shines through — not all light is healing, and not all progress is kind.

Sometimes, awakening means questioning what we’ve been told “is safe.” 💡"

This is so true! 🚦“No Mum, the top light is orange!”

Yep, my youngest was convinced that red traffic lights were orange until he got his Irlen lenses. Suddenly, things just… made sense. 🤯

And honestly? I totally get it. I LOVE colour, but before my own lenses, the world was not as vivid. But once I put my Irlen filters on? BAM 💥— it was like someone outlined everything with a superfine liner. Vivid. Clear. Full on 3D! 😯

It’s not magic, it’s simply how our brains process light and colour. And when you’ve been struggling without even realising it, the difference is nothing short of mind-blowing.

If you or your little one see the world a little differently, please trust your gut. Irlen might be the missing piece. 💡

✨ Let us know if the colours changed for you too once you got your lenses — we LOVE hearing your lightbulb moments!

😎 Irlen Syndrome Awareness Week 2025

Well hello there! 👋

If you're new here – Welcome! 💁‍♀️

And if you've been around for a while – thanks for sticking with me.😀

I'm Nicola, founder of Clearer with Colour - Irlen Screening.
Colour enthusiast💜
Migraine survivor 😵‍💫
and all-round Light-sensitive legend 😎 - if I do say so myself!!

Now, if you’ve followed me for a bit, you might’ve seen me share my sons' Irlen stories – reading issues, depth perception problems (clumsiness to you and me), bright white page aversions, headaches and tummy aches, to overlays, filters, the lot.

But this post? This one’s all about me. Because yes, surprise surprise… I’ve got Irlen Syndrome too. (It does run in families after all !)

BUT here’s the kicker:
📚 I was a fab reader growing up. Books were my jam. I couldn't get enough of them 🤭

👩‍🎓Academia? I loved it. It was my safe space.

☀️🔦 Sunlight and limelight? Not for me, thanks. I was the kid reading in the shade while everyone else played out in the blazing sun.

I never thought much of it, but I often had headaches that led to migraines as I got older, along with that feeling of “ugh, lights again” anytime I stepped into a room with fluorescent lights or overheads.

There were Doctor visits and tests that got nowhere (of course) as they weren't looking at the right part of my body 🙄

Fast forward to 2019 when I retrained as an Irlen Screener and discovered I too was mildly affected. Move on another few years — life, hormones, changing environments (hello, fluorescent lights and long screening days 🙃) and those symptoms cranked right up.

Suddenly I was saying no❌️ to night drives 🌃 and no again to anything social that might involve car headlights or bright rooms (aka most things after 6pm in the UK between October and March). 🥴

So, I did what any good Irlen practitioner would do... I took my own advice. I had my Irlen Screener report, so I saw an Irlen Diagnostician, and got myself kitted out with some deliciously life-changing spectral filters (purple and green, darling 💜💚 because why not be fabulous while sorting your brain out?).

✨ Now I can drive at night without gripping the steering wheel like I’m in Fast & Furious.

😎 I wear my glasses all day and don’t come home feeling like I’ve run a marathon under a strobe light.

✨ And I say yes to things again. No flinching. No fear. No worry about headaches. 👍

Irlen Syndrome doesn’t care if you’re a struggling reader or a straight-A student.

It doesn’t care if you’re loud and proud or quiet in the corner. It can affect anyone and up to 20% of the general population is affected. Most just haven't heard of it - YET !

THIS is why I do what I do.

I’ve seen (and felt) the difference it makes and I love helping others discover this too: Clearer vision, clearer thinking, a full life, bright in the light or sun, but Clearer with Colour. 😉

✨ So if you’ve ever felt weird about light, tired for “no reason”, struggled with migraines, or just felt more “you” in the shade message me.

Let's talk Irlen as you don't have to be a poor reader to be affected!
