🛝 The power of playgrounds: happier children and better mental health

New analysis shared by the Association of Play Industries reinforces something we passionately believe at Positive Playtimes: playgrounds are not an optional extra. They are essential spaces for children’s wellbeing, development and happiness.

The research, led by Professor Helen Dodd, found that children aged two to four who spent more time playing in playgrounds experienced better mental health and wellbeing.

It also found that:
🌳 83% of children used a playground at least once a week during spring and summer.
⚠️ Yet 5% of children spent fewer than ten hours across an entire year playing in playgrounds.
These findings underline the importance of every child having access to high-quality, welcoming and inclusive places to play.

Although this research focuses on younger children, its message matters enormously for schools too. School playgrounds provide daily opportunities for children to:

💙 Strengthen their mental and physical wellbeing
🤝 Develop friendships and feel that they belong
🌈 Play alongside children with different needs and interests
💬 Build communication and social skills
🌱 Develop confidence, creativity and resilience

However, access to a playground alone is not enough. Children need sufficient time, space and permission to play, supported by inclusive environments and adults who understand the value of play.

When we invest in playgrounds, we invest in happier, healthier childhoods.

A significant report was released: “API – The State of Outdoor Play in Primary Schools: A Summary for Educators.”

This publication provides one of the clearest pictures we’ve had in years of what outdoor play really looks like in schools today and why it urgently needs our attention.

The report highlights a mixed landscape. On one hand, many schools recognise the value of outdoor play and are working hard to provide children with opportunities to run, explore, build, imagine, and connect. On the other hand, budget constraints, limited space, risk-averse cultures, and pressure on curriculum time mean that play is too often squeezed into the margins of the school day.

Some of the key themes emerging from the report include:
Unequal access to quality outdoor environments. Some children enjoy rich, stimulating play spaces, while others have only concrete yards or overcrowded grounds.

A growing awareness of the link between outdoor play and wellbeing. Schools that prioritise play report improvements in behaviour, emotional regulation, physical health, and classroom engagement.

A need for staff confidence and training. Many educators want to support outdoor play but feel unsure about managing risk, planning for play, or justifying time spent outside.

A clear call for investment. Both in the physical environment and in the mindset that sees play not as an “extra,” but as a foundation for learning and healthy development.

We’d love to hear from you:
What does outdoor play look like in your school or organisation?
What barriers are you facing?
What changes do you dream of making?
Where have you already seen success?

Your experiences help us keep pushing for change and help ensure every child has access to playful, inspiring outdoor spaces.

"Play is the highest expression of human development in childhood, for it alone is the free expression of what is in a child’s soul." - Friedrich Froebel.

When we create positive, structured playtimes, we are giving children a safe space to be themselves, to explore, and to grow. And when our students are thriving, our staff feel the positive effects, too.

A happy playground means a less stressful workday for everyone. It's a win-win for the entire school community.

“Spelen bij ons” – “Come and play with us.” 💛

While exploring Arnhem, in the Netherlands I spotted this wonderful toy shop and play café and immediately fell in love with its name and sentiment.

What a simple yet powerful invitation: come in, join us, play and belong.

Play crosses languages, cultures and generations. It helps children connect, form friendships, build confidence and experience that all-important feeling of belonging.

Every playground and every school should communicate the same welcoming message to every child:

Come and play with us. There is a place for you here.
