Maidstone Grammar School

Maidstone Grammar School is delighted to announce a very good set of GCSE results this year. 45% of all subject grades were awarded at grades 7-9, with 25% at grades 8-9. In addition, 98% of students gained at least five grades 4-9, including English and Mathematics.

23 students achieved at least eight grades at grade 8 or above, while 14 students achieved grade 8 or higher in at least ten subjects.

Mr Tomkins, Headteacher, commented: "We are delighted that our students have performed so well, which is a result of the hard work of both the students and our dedicated staff. Year 11 should be immensely proud of their achievements.”

Congratulations to all our students receiving their GCSE results today. We look forward to welcoming many of them into our Sixth Form. For those moving on to a different school, college or setting, we wish them every success in the future.

Maidstone Grammar School is delighted to announce an excellent set of A Level examination results. Overall, 67% of grades were awarded at A*-B, 35% at A*-A, 39 students achieved at least three A grades, and 20 students achieved at least two A* grades. Particular recognition must go to the four students who gained an incredible four A* grades and the one student who achieved three A* grades and two A grades across five subjects.

The excellent performance across the school means that many students have secured their university offers.

Headteacher Mark Tomkins commented: "These excellent grades represent the enormous and collective efforts put in by both students and staff over the last two years."

Congratulations and well done to all our students receiving their A Level results today. Good luck to Year 13 as you take your next steps, whatever they may be.

Congratulations to Tonbridge House, winners of this year's House Cup! In a remarkably close contest, Tonbridge finished with 34,060 points, just 34 points ahead of College House.

As we reach the end of this academic year, we will gather as a whole school in the Quad later today to celebrate the many achievements of the year and announce which House has been awarded the House Cup.

This coveted prize is awarded to the House that has accumulated the most House Points across the year. Points are earned for both academic and co-curricular achievements, reflecting the breadth of contribution made by students throughout the school.

This year's competition has been one of the closest in recent memory. In fact, the leading House has changed each day this week, with no clear winner emerging. Several major events this week have had a significant impact on the standings, including Lower School Speech Day on Monday, Band Evening on Tuesday, and Sports Day on Wednesday. These events generated a substantial number of House Points and reshaped the leaderboard each day.

Following Lower School Speech Day on Monday, Tonbridge were on course to win the House Cup. After Tuesday's academic lessons and Band Evening, College moved into the lead. Then, following Sports Day, where Corpus Christi won the Sports Cup, Corpus Christi went to the top of the table.

After yesterday's academic lessons and the final award of House Points by teachers, the winner of the House Cup is known only to Mr Highway, who oversees the competition. He has placed the result in a sealed envelope to the Headteacher, who will reveal the winner this afternoon in what has been one of the most closely contested House Cup competitions in recent years.

The winning House will also be announced on the homepage of our website following the Headteacher's announcement.

The House Cup is just one way in which we celebrate the many achievements that take place at MGS. Earlier this week, the MGS community came together for Founders' Day and Junior Speech Day, continuing a tradition that has connected generations of Maidstonians.

The photographs shared here span many decades, but they all capture something familiar. Long before this year's prize winners crossed the stage, thousands of MGS students sat where they sat, applauded their friends, collected certificates, received prizes, performed, or simply enjoyed being part of one of the school's most important annual occasions.

This year's ceremony recognised achievement across a remarkable range of disciplines. Prizes were awarded for subjects spanning the arts, humanities, languages, mathematics, sciences, technology, sport and performing arts, alongside House awards, Top Scholar awards and Personal Achievement Awards.

A special thank you goes to the MGS Parents' Association, whose continued support of the Personal Achievement Awards helps ensure that contributions to the wider life of the school are recognised and celebrated alongside academic success.

What makes Founders' Day and Junior Speech Day particularly special is the way they connect past and present. While the faces change from year to year, the values being celebrated remain remarkably consistent: effort, curiosity, perseverance, service, creativity and achievement.

Congratulations to all of this year's prize winners and thank you to everyone who contributed to another memorable occasion.

A Year of Sporting Success at MGS

Today, as students come together for our Annual Sports Day, we are taking the opportunity to celebrate an outstanding year for sport at Maidstone Grammar School.

Sports Day itself reflects the breadth of opportunities available to students, with activities including rowing, spin, Hyrox, golf and darts, alongside the traditional athletics events.

Across the academic year, MGS students have:

✅ Seen 743 students represent the school in competitive sport

As part of this year's Extended Learning Week, our Year 7–9 students worked with Year 1 pupils from Valley Invicta Primary School (East Borough) to create original children's storybooks.

Extended Learning Week is a special part of life at MGS, giving students opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and experiences beyond what is normally covered in the classroom.

After interviewing the Year 1 pupils to gather ideas and inspiration, students spent the week researching, writing and illustrating their stories before returning to the primary school to share the finished books.

The pupils then voted for their favourite story.

A fantastic example of creativity, collaboration and community engagement.

With the FIFA World Cup underway, we're looking back at an MGS team that enjoyed a winning streak of its own.

Between 1993 and 1995, Maidstone Grammar School won the National Schools Challenge three years in a row.

The first victory came in 1993, followed by successful title defences in 1994 and 1995. By the end of that remarkable run, MGS had established itself as one of the most successful schools in the competition's history.

Across those three years, students including Matthew Creevy, Richard Webb, Kieran Devlin, Patrick Cheeseman, John Greenhead, Dan Lewis, Stuart Jones and Anthony Sheffield represented the school, guided by quiz team coach Mr Richardson.

The reports from the time are full of humour as well as success. One team member thanked Mr Dutton for eventually discovering that a supposedly serious fault with the buzzer system turned out to be a light bulb that had not been screwed in properly. Other thanks went to Dr Wilson, Mr McCormick and the long-suffering Mr Toley, who continued to serve as driver, timekeeper and "fall guy".

The most remarkable detail came after the third national title. The 1996 Maidstonian noted that Mr Richardson had effectively applied "World Cup rules" to the competition. Following three consecutive victories, the Schools Challenge trophy was presented to MGS to keep in perpetuity.

The trophy has recently been given a little TLC by our archivist Graham Walker and now sits proudly in one of our display cabinets.

Extended Learning Week is underway at MGS, and our students are making the most of an incredible range of opportunities.

Across the week, students are gaining valuable experience in the workplace, travelling to destinations including Munich and Spain, exploring history at sites such as Dover Castle and the Ramsgate Tunnels, visiting museums and landmarks, taking part in outdoor adventures, and enjoying a variety of sporting and CCF activities. Others are sharing their creativity through work with local primary schools and discovering new interests beyond the classroom.

It is a wonderful example of learning beyond the classroom and the breadth of experiences available at MGS.
