What actually got me into karate in the first place wasn’t discipline. It was belonging.
The technique came later. What kept me showing up as a kid was the structure and the people, having somewhere consistent that made sense when a lot of the rest of life didn’t. That’s the same reason a lot of our students keep coming back now.
If that resonates, message us to find out more about signing your child up.

What your kid actually gets out of karate (hint: it's not just kicks).
Body: Focus. The ability to sit still and listen. Confidence that isn't loud or showy, the quiet kind that comes from knowing you can do hard things. That's what we see most in kids after a few months at the dojo, alongside all the punches and kicks.
Book your child's class for when we start again in September, message the page to get started.

I can't spar, does that mean karate isn't for me?
No. Sensei John is disabled and doesn't spar much himself, and he's built a whole training philosophy around the idea that sparring is one part of karate, not the whole of it. Kata, form work, discipline, focus, confidence, there's a full art here for anyone, whatever their body can or can't do.
However you move, there's always a place for you on the dojo floor.

It's called Club AUsome, a partnership session designed around what actually works for neurodivergent brains: predictable structure, sensory-aware coaching, and zero pressure to mask or "keep up."
Sensei John understands this from the inside, he's autistic and ADHD himself, and he built this class because he knows what a difference the right environment makes.
Curious whether it's right for your child (or you)? Send us a message, no pressure, just a conversation.

There's something good about a class where an 8-year-old and a 48-year-old are learning the same kata side by side. That's Saturday at Sankōkai Shinsei Karate, our all-ages class, open to complete beginners and returning students alike.

We get asked this a lot, so here's the honest answer: nobody throws you in the deep end.
Your first session is about learning to stand, move, and breathe the karate way, kids and adults both start here. No sparring on day one. No pressure to be the fittest person in the room. Just clear instruction, one step at a time.
All you need are comfy clothes, and an open mind. Drop us a message to find out more!

Sensei John Carlow is a 4th Dan, twenty years training, and the founder of Sankōkai Shinsei Karate. He also lives with Crohn's, ADHD, and autism, and he'll tell you straight that karate has done more for his focus and his calm than almost anything else.
That's why this dojo is built the way it is: clear routines, steady structure, and a place where every kind of brain and body is welcome.

You don't need to be "karate fit" to start karate.
Myth: you need to be fit and flexible before you start karate.
Backwards, actually. Karate is how you build fitness and flexibility, not a box you need to tick beforehand. Come as you are. We'll build from there.

No, you're not too old to start karate.
Six years old or sixty. There's a place for you here.
Our classes bring together kids, teens, and adults, sometimes even the same family training side by side. Karate doesn't need to be split by age group to work. It just needs the right dojo behind it.
Bring the whole family. Message us about our class schedule.
