They came to work. That doesn’t mean they were safe.
Domestic and economic abuse do not always stop at the workplace door.
According to the Office for National Statistics, an estimated 3.8 million people aged 16 and over experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales in the year ending March 2025.
And abuse is not always physical.
The UK Government’s Economic Abuse Toolkit explains that economic abuse can involve controlling someone’s access to money, bank accounts, employment, housing, credit, benefits or transport.
At work, the signs may be subtle:
Repeated distressing calls.
Anxiety around money or transport.
Pressure to account for movements or finishing times.
Unexpected absences or lateness.
A noticeable loss of confidence.
None of these signs alone proves that abuse is taking place. But changes and patterns can sometimes tell us that something is wrong.
The role of a colleague or manager is not to investigate someone’s personal life. It is to notice, listen without judgement, record concerns appropriately and follow the right safeguarding or workplace route.
At Kent Business College, we have a dedicated Safeguarding & EDI Team because no one should feel that they have to deal with a concern alone.
If something is affecting you, or you are worried about someone else, we are here to listen, support you and help you access the right support.

A safer workplace starts with awareness - and knowing that support is there when you need it.

Not every trend deserves a place in your future.
Vapes can look sleek, smell sweet and come in flavours that sound as though they belong on an ice-lolly van.
But “blue raspberry” is not one of your five a day and your lungs are unlikely to be impressed by the packaging.
A major review by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health examined more than 14,000 published articles and brought together evidence from 81 studies.
It found consistent links between va**ng among children and young people and respiratory symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, bronchitis symptoms and asthma flare-ups. The review also found links with ni****ne dependence and a greater likelihood of later cigarette smoking, alongside concerns about oral health and mental wellbeing.
There is still more to learn about the long-term effects. But “we do not know everything yet” should not be mistaken for “there is nothing to worry about”.
And before the wagging finger comes out, this is not about judging anyone.
Young people are navigating peer pressure, stress, clever marketing and products deliberately designed to look colourful, familiar and harmless. A calm, honest conversation will usually travel further than a lecture, especially one that begins with, “When I was your age…”
It is also important to keep the context clear: va**ng may help some adult smokers move away from ci******es, but that does not make it risk-free or appropriate for children and non-smokers.
At Kent Business College, we believe education is about more than developing a strong career. It is also about having the knowledge and confidence to make informed choices about the future you are building.
Pause. Check the facts. Start the conversation.
Because your health deserves a place in your future, even when the latest trend does not.
