Only half of accommodation requests were fully granted in a 2025 peer-reviewed survey of 993 employees in one US healthcare system. That figure does not describe English apprenticeships—but it gives providers and employers a valuable question: was the agreed support usable at the moment of learning?

A plan might promise advance materials, helpful software or a quieter space. Yet the slides can arrive late, the workplace device may reject the software, or the quiet room may be unavailable. The adjustment exists in a record but not in the learner’s day.

Our new Monday Common Room article, by the Kent Business College Teaching and Inclusion Team, brings together current English policy and five academic evidence lenses. It includes a 2025 study of eight nursing degree apprentices, research on autistic student voice, and systematic reviews of computing education and neurodivergent workplace adjustments. The limits matter: small interviews reveal experience, not prevalence; observational associations do not prove causation; and many popular recommendations still need stronger testing.

We therefore propose a simple delivery test for one meaningful task. Was support available, understood, aligned with the intended competence, genuinely usable and followed by evidence of learning?

The article sets out practical roles for the apprentice, tutor, workplace mentor and quality leader. It also shows how to preserve challenge and make room for ingenuity: once the learner understands the work, can they improve the process, challenge an assumption or make a decision clearer?

As new apprenticeship brokerage services are planned across 14 mayoral areas, inclusion must travel with expansion. A reliable adjustment is not a lower expectation; it creates a fairer route towards an ambitious one.

A benefit is only valuable if you can show the difference it makes.
One of the key messages shared by Stephen Jenner at the London Masterclass was the importance of moving beyond simply identifying benefits.
A credible benefit needs to be measurable, clearly owned and connected to a strategic objective. Without that clarity, it becomes much harder to demonstrate whether an investment has actually delivered meaningful value.
