On Monday 6 July, we were delighted to welcome the renowned author Emily Katy to Valley Park, thanks to the initiative of our Head Student, Olivia, who, after reading Girl Unmasked, invited Emily to visit our school.
Emily, who is autistic and has ADHD, is the Sunday Times bestselling author of 'Girl Unmasked: How Uncovering My Autism Saved My Life', a Trustee of the Autistic Girls Network, a mental health nurse, and an inspiring speaker and advocate for neurodivergence and mental health.
Emily delivered a thought-provoking assembly to Year 8 before leading a workshop with 35 students from Years 7 to 13. Through her personal experiences, she encouraged meaningful conversations about neurodivergence, mental health, and navigating the world as a young autistic adult with ADHD.
Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping our students build understanding, empathy and confidence. We will be inviting Emily back next year to work with more year groups and to support the launch of The Kaleidoscope Project, our new student-led neurodivergent advocacy group.
Mrs Main is also looking forward to expanding this work with parents and the wider community, strengthening our commitment to inclusion and ensuring that every member of our school community feels seen, heard and valued.
A huge thank you to Emily for sharing her story so openly, and to Olivia for making this inspiring visit possible.
