A Kent Test pass can open a door—but does it tell you whether your child will thrive once they walk through it?

Grammar school can be brilliant for the right child. But the “best” school on paper isn’t always the best fit in practice.

Kent parents: what matters most when choosing a secondary school—results, atmosphere, pastoral support or your child’s own instinct?

An uncomfortable question for Kent parents…

Does the Kent Test create a level playing field—or does it favour children whose families have the time, knowledge and money to prepare them?

As an 11+ tuition provider, we recognise that we’re part of this conversation. We see how much difference preparation and familiarity can make.

Should every Kent child receive the same level of preparation—or is private tutoring simply another choice parents should be free to make or not make?

We’d genuinely like to hear what local parents think. Please keep the discussion respectful.

Here's one 11+ habit you can start practising at home this week. ⏱️

If your child is stuck on a question, teach them not to let one difficult problem steal time from the questions they can answer.

After around a minute, make a decision: answer, make your best attempt, or move on and return later.

It sounds simple, but learning when to move on is an important part of developing the speed, confidence and exam technique needed for the Kent 11+.

Try it during their next practice paper — and see whether they finish more of the test.

📌 Follow RTC Maidstone for our next 11+ Tip — we'll be sharing practical advice you can actually use at home each week.

What does a typical lesson at RTC Maidstone actually look like? 💙

Sometimes it’s heads down and completely focused. Sometimes it’s getting out of the chair, moving things around and being active in the learning. And sometimes it’s hands in the air, laughter and a lot of fun.

We believe there’s room for all three.

Our small-group tuition gives our teachers the chance to really know their students — how they learn, where they need support and when they’re ready for a little more challenge.

Whether they’re building foundations in Maths and English, preparing for the Kent 11+, or developing the skills they’ll need for GCSE Maths, English and Science, we want our students to make strong academic progress without losing their curiosity or enjoyment of learning.

That’s what Traditional Teaching. Forward Thinking. means to us: high-quality teaching and strong foundations, delivered in a way that recognises the individual child sitting in front of us.

And judging by those hands in the air, we think they approve. 🙌
