Why does it feel like things go in one ear and straight out the other?
If you’re a parent, you’ve probably given a few simple instructions… only to watch most of them disappear. It’s frustrating — and it can look like they’re not listening.
But for many, the real challenge is Working Memory.
Their brain is like a small mental whiteboard. Most people can hold 5–7 things at once. Some might only manage 2 or 3 — and when something new comes in, something else gets wiped away.
It’s not laziness. It’s not lack of effort.
It’s simply how their brain handles information.
Here are three small shifts that make a big difference:
💛 Keep It Small
Give one step at a time. Short, simple instructions stick best.
💛 Make It Visual
Use sticky notes, checklists, or photos. Seeing it takes the pressure off remembering it.
💛 Pause for 5 Seconds
A short pause after giving an instruction gives their brain time to process.
Little changes like these can turn daily stress into smoother, calmer moments for everyone.
