🧮✨ Learn it, apply it, play it! ✨🧮

This maths session focused on multiplying numbers using the expanded method. After working through examples on the whiteboard and developing a clear understanding of the method, we put those skills to the test with a competitive game of Connect Four! 🔴🟡

Each move required solving a calculation correctly — so every turn was an opportunity to practise, apply and consolidate learning. 🎯

A great way to make maths fun, engaging and memorable while building confidence with multiplication! ⭐️

This spelling lesson was all about reviewing, consolidating and applying the spelling patterns we've been working hard on over the past few weeks.

Rather than completing worksheets, the learner took part in a variety of short, engaging games and activities designed to keep them thinking, moving and talking about their learning. From spotting and correcting mistakes to explaining spelling rules and tackling challenges against the clock, every activity encouraged active participation and lots of discussion.

Our main focus was on suffixes, with the learner applying rules such as dropping the final e, changing y to i, and choosing the correct suffix based on the root word. Most importantly, they didn't just spell the words correctly—they were able to explain why they had made each spelling choice. Developing this deeper understanding helps children become confident, independent spellers rather than relying on memorisation alone.

It was fantastic to see so much enthusiasm, resilience throughout the lesson. They showed just how much progress they've made and should be incredibly proud of themselves. Well done! 🌟

A warm welcome to one of my newest learner! 🌟

The first session is always about getting to know each other, building confidence and making learning enjoyable. This lesson was filled with games, practical activities and engaging challenges that allowed me to carry out an informal assessment, identifying strengths while also spotting the areas where a little extra support will help learning flourish.

Together we consolidated understanding of odd and even numbers, building confidence and securing key number knowledge. We also explored addition strategies, addressing a common misconception and explaining the importance of place value.

There was also a very special guest ... 🧸 Teddy came along and was keen to learn too! He certainly picked up a thing or two and helped make the session even more relaxed and fun.

I'm proud of the fantastic effort, enthusiasm and willingness to have a go throughout the session. I can't wait to see this confidence continue to grow.

In this lesson we explored regular and irregular polygons and lines of symmetry.

This learner learnt how to identify regular polygons (where all sides and angles are equal) and irregular polygons (where they are not). They then investigated lines of symmetry by carefully examining different shapes and deciding whether they could be split into two identical halves.

The highlight of the lesson was becoming a maths detective! 🔍 The learner looked for patterns and made predictions before discovering an exciting rule:

⭐ Regular polygons have the same number of lines of symmetry as they have sides.

Rather than simply being told the rule, the learner investigated it themselves by testing different shapes, discussing their ideas and explaining their reasoning. This approach helps children develop a deeper understanding of maths, improves their confidence and encourages them to think logically and solve problems independently.

Spelling & Vocabulary Session 📚🧲

Today we used magnetic letters and word-building activities to strengthen spelling and vocabulary skills.

🔤 We practised recalling spelling rules for adding the suffixes -ing and -ed to root words, exploring how words change when suffixes are added.

🧩 We also learned about the meaning and use of the negative prefixes in-, im-, il-, and ir-, and used examples to sort and build words such as incorrect, illegal, irrational, and impatient.

⭐ A key learning point was understanding that im- and in- can be particularly tricky. A helpful rule to remember is that im- is usually used when the root word begins with m or p (e.g., impossible, immature, impatient), while in- is used with many other root words (e.g., incorrect, incomplete).

Hands-on activities like these help make spelling patterns and word meanings more memorable and give students confidence when tackling unfamiliar vocabulary. 😊

Angle Art!
Exploring angles through hands-on learning! 📐
This learner investigated acute, obtuse and right angles, demonstrating secure knowledge of angle facts and the ability to classify, compare and order angles with confidence and creativity.

A bespoke Snakes and Ladders game designed to consolidate pupils’ understanding of the spelling rules used when adding the suffixes -ed and -ing. Although, I have to admit, the “snakes” ended up looking rather more like oversized tadpoles!

This session was planned to assess the learner's prior knowledge and understanding of angles and shape in a fun and engaging way so that they didn't feel like they were being assessed. These activities helped identify gaps in knowledge so that future lessons are pitched appropriately and the learner can build confidence within the topics. The lesson began with a quick, fast-paced multiplication activity to support recall and fluency in preparation for the Year 4 Multiplication Check taking place this Friday.
