Minding Me Psychologists I am a Psychologist and Coach with 20 years experience working with clients to help them to overcome challenges and achieve their goals.

I am a Psychologist and Coach with a wealth of experience working with clients from all walks of life. I understand the psychology of coaching and am proficient in the use of a range of advanced coaching techniques and models and their application to life, health, business, and performance coaching.

All of my work is centred around helping people to change aspects of their lives that they are not satisfied with. As a trained Psychologist, I can help you to make sense of the difficulties you are facing and explore your responses to such situations. I do this in a supportive way, with a little bit of challenge when appropriate. I use psychological theory in a practical, down to earth way. I firmly believe that we have the answers to our own problems within ourselves; however we can’t always see these clearly. When coaching, I work with you to facilitate the process of you finding these answers. Along the way I may also teach you some useful techniques, or invite you to use certain tools if I think they will benefit you’.

I have helped people with a number of different issues, including overcoming anxiety and panic attacks, developing self-confidence; overcoming stress, managing long term health conditions, deciding on a next career move; preparing for promotion; going back to work after a period of time off; dealing with redundancy; managing difficult relationships; preparing for exams, interviews and presentations; overcoming procrastination and time management issues.

I tailor my coaching approach to the individual needs of all of my clients. The general structure is to work with clients to:

Increase their self-awareness and clarify their goals. Identify and understand any self-limiting beliefs and behaviours. Challenge these limiting thoughts and behaviours by practicing more helpful strategies. Review progress and action plan for sustained change

World Mental Health Day 💜

I had another lovely day working Glen this week, spending time with nine wonderful young people.

One of the highlights was seeing this beautiful poster created by one of the pupils, full of lovely reminders about looking after our mental health.

Be yourself. Be kind. Be confident. Never give up. 🌈

A lovely reminder that sometimes our young people have just as much to teach us as we have to teach them.

Kindness, encouragement and understanding can make such a difference. 💜

Professional standards matter 💜

I’ve been a member of the Association for Coaching for many years. When people come to me for coaching or psychological support, I think it’s really important that they know I take the responsibility that comes with this work seriously.

Continuing to learn, reflect on my practice and work within professional and ethical standards has always been really important to me.

I’m very grateful to all of the people who have trusted me to support them over the years. 💜

This one really resonated with me today.

Mammy and Daddy have always told me to remember to enjoy the journey, that’s what it’s all about.

It’s so easy to focus on where we want to get to, or what we want to change, that we forget life is happening right now ❤️

A psychological analysis of what happens when you try to be productive when you should have just gone to bed… 😂

I thought I’d be all organised last night and empty the dishwasher before bed.

I was exhausted, I’d had a glass of w**e, and couldn’t wait to get into bed, but thought, “You’ll be glad when it’s done.”

Boy, was I wrong.

This innocent-looking tumbler decided to tumble straight out of my hand.

(Is that why they’re called tumblers?! 😂)

It smashed EVERYWHERE. Tiny shards all over the kitchen.

Awwww, I was so annoyed. I just wanted to go to bed!

But I knew the kids would wander in barefoot in the morning, so out came the dustpan and brush.

Everyone else was in bed. Just me, hunting for microscopic pieces of glass.

FINALLY, I emptied the last dustpan into the bin…

And didn’t I feckin knock it over.

Glass EVERYWHERE.

AGAIN.

Across the OTHER side of the kitchen.

OH. MY. GOD.

RAGIN. 😂😂😂

Was I simply exhausted (with the w**e probably not helping!), or am I becoming more accident-prone because of MS?

I don’t know, but after several nasty burns and a broken fibula over the past year, maybe I need to be a wee bit more careful, especially when I’m exhausted.

Mammy has always said I’m dangerous in the kitchen 😂, so maybe MS can’t take all the blame.

Then I started thinking about positivity.

Does sitting in my kitchen absolutely RAGIN mean positive thinking doesn’t work?

Of course not.

Positive psychology isn’t about being positive all the time.

Sometimes things are just really bloody annoying.

We can be positive people and still feel angry, frustrated, sad or overwhelmed. Those emotions are part of being human.

We don’t have to respond perfectly when things go wrong.

I couldn’t un-smash the glass. All I could control was what I did next.

So I cleaned it up.

Then I cleaned it up AGAIN.

Definitely not without swearing. 😂

Sometimes we just have to deal with what’s in front of us, allow ourselves to be totally pi**ed off about it…

…and carry on. ❤️

Although, in hindsight, I should have left the bloody dishwasher until morning. 😂

Our minds are very good at filling in the blanks — especially when we’re anxious. 💭

Sometimes it helps to stop and ask: what do I actually know to be true, and what am I assuming?

Thoughts can feel incredibly convincing. That doesn’t always make them facts. 💜

A client said something in a session this week that I really loved.

We were talking about a big life decision he has to make and, like so many of us do, he was thinking through all the different possibilities and worrying about making the wrong choice.

Then he said:

“Is the worst really all that bad?”

I thought it was such a great reflective question.

We can spend so much time worrying about the worst-case scenario.

Maybe it wouldn’t be what we wanted. Maybe it would be disappointing or difficult. But would it be a disaster?

And if it did happen, could we cope with it?

Very often, we probably could.

I loved that shift in his thinking. Sometimes we don’t need to convince ourselves that everything is going to work out perfectly. We just need to remind ourselves that we’ll handle it if it doesn’t.
