Guiding and tuition for shore anglers, whether novices or veterans, locals or visitors. Day or night sessions: tackle and bait provided.

I began offering a guided sea angling tuition service in 2015 following the publication of my book - "Shore Fishing - A Guide to Cardigan Bay". The service starts every spring and continues through into the winter, weather permitting. I cover the Cardigan Bay coast from Aberystwyth to Tywyn and - by arrangement - beyond. I cater for anyone from complete novices through to visiting anglers wanting

Hi all,

After the completely underestimated exhaustion of clearing my late Father's house I am having a breather for the first part of this season. Will probably restart the guiding service later this summer so watch this space! All the best - John

July 20th 2023: finally open for business after a massive house-clearance job. First booking tomorrow. Then the weather gets stroppy for a day or two, but it's good to get back into this at last! See you on the beach, maybe???

Taking a break from a huge push with my day-job and inspecting my tackle-boxes - something I've not done for some 8 months. A family health crisis that ended with bereavement and the usual admin has dominated my life since last autumn. So a lot of work to do on my collection of rigs!

I'm hoping we'll be clear of all admin by mid-June and that I can start doing fishing tuition again. I'll announce it on here once I get to that point! Now, where did I put those 2/0s???

Cheers - John

Diary updated: dodging the floating w**d and Welsh shore species #49 - and a rather unusual one at that!

A windy and unsettled week is coming up so we are all crossing our fingers that the w**d circulating aimlessly around the Bay will finally end up high and dry, on the shingle! It has really affected the fishing at some venues and as these are the ones where I teach novices, that has created a big problem.

Quiet at Borth-Ynyslas last night (just two school bass and where are the flatfish?) but good to be back up and running again. Most of the trips in the coming week or two will be with novices in any case, helping them get ready for the time when there should be more fish about. Usually this happens late August-early September, so it's not far off now.

It's almost May 2021 and with the second COVID jab surely not far off, plus the period for immunity to reach peak, I am starting to think about guided fishing once again!

I figure it will start sometime around the middle of the summer so watch this space! Been a long time but everything is ready to go.

Hi folks - just a note to let you know that the guiding service is currently suspended while this dangerous crisis continues. I will be back on the case as soon as that can happen, but for the meantime I have to act responsibly. All the best - John

Guided trips to Borth this week - potentially Tuesday 1300 onwards, definitely Wednesday 1330 onwards. Target species - rays, dabs and other flatties, all sorts really! Places available on both days. Tackle if required and bait supplied.

Well what a dire start to October, weather-wise, with wind and rain a big feature! Last week I did manage to get out at Tywyn and had some good whiting by the area's standards, to 36cm. Nice to see instead of getting pin-sized individuals three at a time!

This week I quite fancy Borth but away from the Estuary after that big pulse of mountain flood-water. Good catches of rays still being reported and it's the time of year for plump dabs, so various potential targets to try for. This autumn so far, snatching a couple of days here and a couple there is the name of the game!

Diary is updated, with an account of the trips from mid-September onwards, a tale of flatfish, mackerel - and rays! We've been doing rather well on the latter! For the whole story and pix, see:
