Fallibroome Alumni Association We hope that former students and staff would welcome the opportunity to maintain contact with the sc

With over 40 years of history we now have a large group of former students who will have fond memories of their experience of Fallibroome and it will be fascinating to hear of their careers and families - some of whom will be current students. If you've moved away and lost touch then I am pleased to inform you that the school has built on the strong foundations established by the first Head, Ted Hughes and his successor Mike Batson and we can now justifiably claim to be one of the best schools in the country. We've been recognised as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in our last three inspections and have taken advantage of the opportunities presented by successive Governments to become a hugely successful Specialist College of Performing Arts and Academy. In 2010 we became one of the first National Teaching Schools in the country. Such success is based on the pursuit of excellence and a desire to create the conditions for our students to grow, both intellectually and socially, so they can make an active contribution to a complex world. Creating opportunities for students to find their passion and succeed is what drives teachers and that's always been true at Fallibroome. I hope you will consider joining the Alumni Association and help us create a powerful source of inspiration for current students.

I've just heard the sad news that former colleague and Drama teacher, Liselore Woltering, has been diagnosed with aggressive bowel cancer which has spread to her liver. One of the potential treatments is available privately in Germany and a 'Go Fund Me' page has been set up. Details are attached for anyone wishing to donate.

Below is a message from former student Sophie Nixon-Clark.

Hello. I was a Fallibroomer from around '83-'90 and thanks to the expert tutoring by Mr Speakman have grown up to be a full time artist. I am based in Manchester and exhibit widely but thought it might be nice to get in touch and let you know a group of Manchester artists I tour with are coming to the Silk Museum in Macclesfield. The preview is tomorrow (Saturday 2-5) all welcome and the show is on until 23rd August.

Very sad to hear of the death of former student David Hughes. David attended Fallibroome in the late 80s/early 90s and was a well-liked and popular student. Sincere condolences to David's wife, son, brother Adam (who also attended Fallibroome) and David's many friends.

Very sad to report the death of former student, Michelle Cavanagh (Michelle Grant when she was at school.) Michelle attended Fallibroome in the late 1980s/early '90s and was a popular and well-liked member of the school. After leaving school Michelle went on to set up her own business and many of her clients will be saddened and shocked to hear of her death after a brave battle with illness. Sincere condolences to Michelle's family and friends.

When I retired in 2011 – hard to believe it is so long ago as the time has just flown by – I continued my link with the school by doing some staff training sessions and the occasional day of supply teaching. During the first 12 months of my retirement Peter Rubery asked me if I might be interested in taking on the embryonic Alumni Association and giving it a solid start in life. At this point I must pay tribute to former student Malcolm Bird who inaugurated the whole process in 2011 and who organised and funded the initial reunion.
I was initially reluctant as I wasn’t quite sure what I would be taking on or whether I was the right person. What changed my mind was Facebook. In the months following my retirement about 1200 past students and occasionally their parents contacted me via Facebook and I had some really interesting ‘conversations’ with many and found it fascinating to hear of their life experiences, challenges, successes and occasional failures. It has been a real privilege to have shared birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, new additions to families, job successes and so much more. (I just wish I had a pound for every ‘all Fallibroome wedding’ there has been over the years!) These contacts made me think that the Alumni Association could be a powerful way of using past students’ expertise and experiences and I agreed to Peter’s request. 14 years on, 4 re-unions, 1 long-service award ceremony and 1 concert later the followers have now grown to nearly 3000 and members have been used as guest speakers, work placement providers and career guidance counsellors and in the firm knowledge that the Fallibroome Alumni Association is now well and truly established I think the time has come for me to finally ‘leave’ and hand over to the next incumbent. I have enjoyed a 46 year relationship with the school and it will always occupy a prominent place in my heart. I wish all past, present and future students every success in whatever life has in store for them.

Signing off for a final time.

Thanks to former student Gaynor Perry (Jeffrey) for this photo from 1984/'85 when Fallibroome was chosen to provide one of the supporting choirs for the touring professional production of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' at The Rex in Wilmslow. It was quite a time commitment but a great experience.

I've just received the following from former student Lucy Yates (Wray). Anyone with children doing exams might like to guide them to read this.

Lucy Wray (now Yates) here from the GCSE class of 98 / A-Levels 2000. I recently started a new job for The Co-op, as a Value Strategy Communication and Engagement Lead following a stint in the Corporate Affairs team at Kellanova (formerly Kellogg's), and 8 years running my own micro PR agency. My background is PR having clocked up 10 years at various agencies around Manchester. My reason for sharing this is a shoutout to everyone that it's never too late to change paths or go after a big goal, and to always believe you can do it. Without knowing how young the members of this group are, a key part of what I'm hoping to share is that jobs and companies that you may think are out of your reach, are absolutely not. As a regular kid, with regular grades, I always assumed these kinds of roles were for other people - private school kids, straight A graders or just those downright lucky souls. But I'm living proof that's not true. I also believe you can't be the success you can't see, so a message to those sitting their exams or at another of life's crossroads, just go for it, because it certainly is attainable, and if you don't, then you definitely won't be in with a chance.

Lucy Yates, previously PR and Communications Specialist at Kellanova, has been appointed Value Strategy Communication & Engagement Lead at superma...
