After listening to Eric Carle read his story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the children became the caterpillar from the story and tasted all the food from the story. They talked about the flavours and smells of the food, using words like sweet, juicy, bitter, soft, crunchy and yummy. Mr Hughes came to visit and tasted some of the food for himself.

GREEN FINGERS
After talking to the children, they told us that they would like to learn about seeds and plants. We read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and then gave each child a bean to grow.
The children started by getting their bean to sprout in a pot. After the roots and shoot started to grow the children transferred their bean into a mini-propagator. We will watch to see how the roots and shoot develop over the next couple of weeks.
When the plants are big enough the children will then put them into large pots to take home.

After playing with our pirate ship the children found a pirate king/queen crown. As there was only one some the children asked if they could make a crown for themselves. The children used the resources in the workshop to make crowns to play with. After talking about pirates the children decided to make treasure maps. As a group we talked about the areas around Pre-School which the children then drew.
After drawing their maps the children went on a treasure hunt. They were encouraged to use the prepositions on, under, behind, next to and above to describe where they had found their treasure.

The children experienced a welly walk in the snow. We looked for the different footprints in the snow and listened to the snow crunching under our feet. We even found lots of frosty spiders web on the fence.
