Unlock Your Child's Academic Potential with New Leaf Tutoring

🌱 Is your child settling in to Year 6? 🌱

Often clouded by SATs, the stress of which can actually be a distraction from learning, Year 6 is about preparing children from the challenges they will face in transitioning to high school.

I’m a super proud tutor today after my youngest tutee successfully argued that this was four 4s in a game of Yahztee this evening!

🌱 I’m very excited to have not one, but TWO new clients starting today.

The first session is a consultation and I’ll spend some time speaking with both the parent/legal guardians of the child and the child, it usually takes 45-60 minutes. During this time we’ll establish your expectations, how we can help your child and what they hope to achieve.

I’ll then create a bespoke plan for each child that we will work through over the following sessions.

These consultations have a fee of just £15 and there is no obligation to book any further sessions if you don’t feel that we’re a good match.

The only way children can improve their writing is through targetted feedback. That can come in a variety of forms but without it children are unlikely to make effective edits to their work.

In school, a child might work 1-to-1 with an adult, but this doesn’t happen for every piece of writing and realistically your child won’t receive feedback until the next day at the earliest. It’s not possible for teachers to feedback quickly to every child in their class.

By the time they’ve receive that feedback, the child has already moved on and the feedback becomes less effective. Progress and feedback come hand in hand together. Good progress can only be made when a child receives good feedback as they are writing.

In other words, the longer a child has to wait for feedback, the less effective that feedback becomes.

🌱 Yesterday I posted about the number of children leaving primary school without the basic skills necessary to succeed at secondary school, particularly in writing.

As a teacher, I always found that this is the area where children made the slowest progress because there are so many different things for them to think about at once. In my experience, most parents see that their child has neat handwriting, good spelling and that their child’s writing makes sense but a teacher’s assessments take into account so much more.

The next time you read some of your child’s writing, take a closer look at how they:
•Plan and organise their ideas
•Vary sentence structure
•Make vocabulary choices
•Link ideas together
•Group ideas into paragraphs
•Choose an appropriate level of formality to suit their intended audience
•Build cohesion
•Use parenthesis and add extra bits of detail into their writing
•Assess the effectiveness of their own writing

It takes a great level of support for children to become proficient with all of these skills.

🌱 Did you know?

Only 59% of pupils achieved the expected standard in their Year 6 SATs in 2022, with the biggest drop in attainment being in writing scores.

The skills and knowledge gained at primary school are often not covered again at secondary, meaning that 41% of the 2022-23 cohort of Year 7s don’t have the necessary knowledge to succeed at secondary school.
