We're proud to have worked alongside Electricity North West to deliver financial education to their apprentices.

Apprenticeships teach valuable technical skills, but understanding money is a life skill that lasts long after the qualification has been achieved. From budgeting and saving to understanding payslips, pensions and future planning, these are the conversations that help people feel more confident as they start their careers.

For us, that's what great development looks like. Not just preparing people for the job, but preparing them for life too.

A huge thank you to Electricity North West for recognising the value of a well-rounded education programme and giving their apprentices the opportunity to build confidence in an area that isn't always talked about, but affects us all.

When you hear the phrase *financial freedom*, what do you actually think of?
A big house? Never having to check your bank balance? Winning the lottery? 😄

Or really, is it knowing what you earn and what you actually take home? Feeling confident enough to ask questions when you don't understand something or being able to enjoy spending money without feeling guilty afterwards.
Mostly it's making decisions because *you* want to, not because you feel pressure to keep up.

For some people, financial freedom is having options. For others, it's simply not worrying every time they open their banking app.
Btw, there isn't a right answer.

So we're curious... what does financial freedom look like to you? 👇

One of the most thought-provoking conversations I had with Melissa Dhillon on her podcast was around the idea of value.

In sport, it's common to hear phrases like "worth £10 million" or "sold for £50 million". And whilst we understand what's meant by it, I've always felt slightly uncomfortable with the language.
Because a football club might place a value on your talent, your potential, your performances or the service you provide, but that is not the same as your value as a human being. The two are very different.

For some athletes, particularly those from certain cultures or backgrounds, separating self-worth from financial worth can be incredibly difficult. When your performance is measured, your salary is discussed and your market value is constantly debated, it's easy for those lines to become blurred.
Learning to build a sense of self-worth from within, rather than from what other people say you're worth, is a skill. And it's an important one.

It's a fascinating conversation that goes far beyond money and into identity, confidence and wellbeing.

Do you actually know what you earn?

Not what your salary says on paper, not what your contract says, what actually lands in your bank account.

It’s a surprisingly common question, especially for young athletes who might be dealing with tax, bonuses, sponsorship income or different income streams for the first time.

Understanding your income isn’t about becoming obsessed with spreadsheets. It’s about knowing what you’ve got to work with, making better decisions and avoiding surprises.

The good news? You don’t have to work it out in your head 🥳

We’ve got a simple salary calculator here https://www.redstareducation.co.uk/blog/salary-calculator/ that can help you understand the numbers and make a bit more sense of what’s actually coming in.

Because knowing your number is a pretty good place to start .. go ahead, give it a go!

When you find yourself in Charlotte, North Carolina, speaking at one of the leading athlete development conferences in the world, it's probably worth taking a moment to appreciate it!

PAADS brings together people from across sport, education, wellbeing and athlete development, all focused on helping athletes thrive both during and beyond their sporting careers and to be invited to join the panel was a real privilege.
One of my biggest takeaways from the event was a reminder that no matter where we come from, we're all carrying money messages. Some helpful and some not so helpful.
Whether those messages come from family, culture, sport, success, setbacks or society's expectations, they shape the way we think, feel and behave around money long before anyone teaches us what a pension is.

That was the heart of the conversation I had alongside Maura Attardi and Cliff Joel Thompson, and it was brilliant to hear so many perspectives from people working across athlete development.

To travel across the Atlantic and discover that the same conversations, challenges and opportunities exist wherever athletes are in the world was pretty special.
And it's why this work matters so much.

Success doesn't have to look expensive ...

It's a conversation that comes up time and time again when we're working with athletes, students and professionals. The pressure to keep up and the feeling that success should look a certain way.

Of course, if that's how you choose to spend your money and it genuinely brings you joy, that's absolutely fine, but what if you're spending because you feel you should or maybe trying to meet an expectation that isn't even yours?

At Red Star Education, financial education isn't just about budgets, tax, pensions and planning. It's also about understanding the money messages we've picked up throughout our lives. The things we've been told as children, the behaviours we've seen growing up and the expectations society places on us. Because when we understand why we think the way we do about money, we make better decisions with it.

If you're an organisation looking to support the financial wellbeing of your people in a meaningful way, we'd love to talk.

I'm sure you never quite take for granted that feeling of stepping out into a stadium.

Whether you're about to compete, coach, support or speak, there's something special about being in a place where so many people have chased big goals and created unforgettable moments.

I'm still soaking in what an incredible experience Charlotte was. Being invited to speak at the PAADS Summit and join a panel discussing financial wellbeing and "The Money Messages You Never Asked For" was a genuine privilege.

The conversations we had weren't really about numbers. They were about people. The beliefs we carry, the experiences that shape us, and the relationship we have with money long before we ever earn it and it's one of the reasons I'm so passionate about creating psychologically safe spaces where athletes, coaches and organisations can explore these topics openly. Because financial wellbeing isn't just about understanding money. It's about understanding ourselves too.

Very grateful for the opportunity, the conversations, and everyone who shared their experiences along the way 🌟

Today we are celebrating Buddy’s birthday 🐾

Now… are we 100% sure it’s actually today? No 😄 but it’s around about now, and honestly he’s more than happy to accept the fuss, treats and attention regardless.

Official job title: Chief Morale Officer at Red Star Education.
Skills include beach walks, emotional support, appearing in content uninvited and reminding us all to slow down every now and then.
Lots of love to our favourite four-legged team member 💙

Please feel free to wish him a happy birthday — we’ll absolutely pass every comment to him 🤩

Behind every young athlete is usually a whole lot more than just talent and hard work.
Early mornings, long drives, kit, fees, time… and a level of support that often goes unseen.

We’ve written a blog about the real cost of supporting a young athlete, not just financially, but everything that comes with it.

If you’re a parent, coach or part of that journey, it might feel very familiar.
