Breaking a difficult question down into small, manageable steps can make a big difference for a child.
It helps reduce overwhelm, makes the task feel more achievable, and gives them a clear way to work through each part of the problem.
As they move step by step, they build understanding, confidence, and the motivation to keep going until they reach the solution.

Back to school prep. Ask your child to create a back-to-school checklist. For younger children, this will help them to understand what’s needed e.g. in their school bag and also give them a bit of writing practice. Plus, they’ll enjoy ticking off the items on the list.
Older children could create a weekly schedule to show you how they plan to manage their time e.g. for homework and other activities. This will give them the responsibility of organising their time and help you to monitor their progress.

It’s easy to lose your routine during the school holidays and that makes it a bit of a struggle in the first week back at school! Our top tip: Gradually bring bed time forward a little each day the week before school starts and set the alarm for slightly earlier too. That way, 7am on the first day of term, won’t feel like such a shock to the system!

One of the simplest ways to help a child learn is to encourage them to reflect.
When children take time to think about what they've learned, what they found challenging, and what they enjoyed, they deepen their understanding and develop valuable problem-solving skills.
That’s why we always include time in our workshops to talk through worksheets and tasks, with lots of positive encouragement and rewards for progress.
