The most enormous thank you to Emma for hosting and everyone who attended the pub quiz at The Union Moretonhampstead on the 6th June to raise funds for Ellen’s headstone. An amazing £461.79 was raised. Also congratulations to Jess who won ‘the big rat’ knitted by Maud Shire (Mickey Mitchell) in the raffle. Thank you everyone 😊❤️

As promised here is the link to help provide Ellen with a headstone. Any donation however small will be very much appreciated - thank you ❤️.

This International Women’s Day and as part of Women in history month I am launching an appeal for one of my Devonshire Darlings - Ellen Brown.

Ellen Brown joined the Womens Land Army in 1940. She served for 5 or 6 weeks at Lambert Farm, Crockernwell before she died of natural causes in her sleep aged just 24.

Ellen now lies in an unmarked grave in Exeter Higher Cemetery and as one of my Devonshire Darlings I would love to be able to provide her with a headstone.

There is a £504 cost payable to Exeter City Council for the right to erect a lawn memorial and an additional cost of approximately £700 for the headstone itself.

I am also fundraising by asking for a donation in return for a knitted rat at talks that I do on the Womens Land Army in Devon and hope to do a public talk in the coming months to further raise funds.

You'll be able to see how you can help with the appeal in the next couple of days but today let's remember and celebrate all our Devonshire Darlings both past and present.

Looking forward to Friday!

Yesterday I was honoured to attend the 100th birthday party of one of my Jean Causley (nee Stansfield) and took along along one of her best friends from Land Army days Grace Dray (nee Murphy). They worked and lived together at the WLA hostel in in 1944, lost touch but were reunited at a party when they were given their Badges of Recognition in 2008.
I wonder if there are any other Land Girls still around who have their friend living nearby? - seems pretty special to me 😊
(The phots on the right were taken in the Winter of 1944 - the bottom phot is Jean with the puppies from the farm they were working on at the time - how cute are they?!)
