Your pillar, which consists of your hips, torso, and shoulders, is the foundation for all movement.

Pillar preparation, or pillar prep, primes critical muscles to prepare the body for training, decreasing the risk of injury and boosting performance.

How to we prep our contact/collision sport athletes?

10/05/2020

The legendary American Football coach Vince Lombardi once said “Football is not a contact sport, it’s a collision sport – dancing is a contact sport”. This is equally applicable to the various codes of rugby, which captivate audiences with player-on-player impacts.

In rugby union, there are multiple forms of collisions – in the tackle, joining rucks and mauls (which can end up looking like a pile-up of bodies), scrum engagement (where players form rows and literally go head to head with their opponents), or even with the ground.

The force involved in a player-on-player clash is related to the speed immediately before and after the collision, the mass (weight) of the bodies involved, the duration of impact and where on the body the impact occurred (soft abdomen or rigid shoulder).

Increased muscular development allows players to better resist force and is something all players can easily attain. But it can also make them heavier and faster, so the impact forces can be greater. Ironically, it is the most highly trained, strongest and fittest players who are most frequently injured because of the increased collision energy.

Therefore adding extra body management stimulus that challenges stability could potentially give added benefits to protect the players.

Sport is all about performance, right?

It’s all about how you perform on the field, on the court, or in the pool.

Teams or individuals can produce performance excellence or have performance disasters. Increasingly too, we hear the term ‘high performance’. Although you might hear or see the term ‘performance’ referenced all the time, do you really understand what performance is? More importantly, do you know what to do to produce elite performance as an athlete, team, or coach?

What do the best coaches do?
What do the best athletes do?
What do the best teams do?

Food for thinking.

Reactive Agility

* Visual processing
* Timing
* Reaction time
* Perception
* Anticipation

In a nutshell, agility is vital for successful performances in most sports.

Take invasion/territorial sports (e.g. football, rugby, hockey, and Netball) for example, whereby the objective of each team is to invade the opposition’s area in an attempt to score a point(s). In these sports, the defending teams are attempting to win possession of the ball by tackling the opposition or forcing errors. Consequently, it is the aim of the attacker to avoid tackles, retain possession, and create scoring opportunities. To prevent the attacking team from scoring, the defenders must continuously ‘anticipate’ and ‘react’ to the attackers’ movements.
