Language teaching in essence has not changed in the last 50 or more years. There have been a variety of different insights, resulting in hefty swings of the pendulum from grammar to no grammar and back again, but the paradigm of deconstructed input persists. There is an enormous gulf between the way that we are designed as human beings to learn to communicate through language, and the way in which

it is formally taught. Rita Baker introduces the concept behind the Global Approach to language learning, which turns the old paradigm on its head. Drawing on her more than 40 years of language teaching, and her observations of language acquisition by her four children and grandchildren, she has designed a set of tools which enables teachers and learners to see languages as systemic entities.
