🌿 There's method in the mess!

Mud pies, puddle jumping and muddy hands are about so much more than having fun! Through hands-on play, children develop important skills such as problem-solving, creativity, communication and resilience as they explore, experiment and make their own discoveries.

And when things don't quite go to plan? That's all part of the learning too!

✨ We're Saying Yes to Mud! Swipe through for 3 simple, muddy activities to try at home with your little one.

A little mud can lead to some brilliant discoveries! 🌱🤎

We’re Saying Yes to Mud this week, giving children plenty of opportunities to get stuck in, explore and use their imaginations.

From mixing muddy pies to discovering what happens when soil meets water, there’s so much to investigate through play. Our educators follow the children’s curiosity, encouraging them to experiment, ask questions and see what they discover. 🪱

Here’s to muddy hands, curious minds and lots of messy fun! 🌿

Say Yes to Mess! 🎨🌿

Mud on knees, paint-covered fingers, sand in shoes and water everywhere. It might look like mess, but for children it can be an experiment, an adventure, a work of art or a new discovery.

We’ve launched The Mess Report, new research exploring how families feel about messy play and whether children today are getting enough opportunities to experience it.

After speaking to 1,000 UK parents of children under 10, we found that 79% agree messy play supports children’s development, creativity and wellbeing, yet 70% believe children today don’t get enough opportunities to get messy.

We’re calling this The Mess Gap.

The Mess Report explores what might be behind that gap, why opportunities to pour, squash, mix, dig, build, splash and create are so valuable, and how we can make more space for them in childhood.

At Kids Planet, we’re proud to say Yes to Mess because we know there is method in the mess, and behind every muddy handprint and paint splatter is an opportunity for learning.

We know that sleep is an important part of every child's growth, development and wellbeing. 💚

Recently, updated safer sleep guidance came into effect across the early years sector - reinforcing the importance of creating safer sleep environments for babies and young children.

At Kids Planet, safer sleep practices are embedded across our nurseries, and our teams work closely with families to support each child's individual routine.

We've shared a few simple reminders that can help create a safe and comfortable sleep environment both at nursery and at home.

Rising 3s have had a wonderful morning. Ania, reflecting the interests of a keychild, set up a football field. A fabulous game quickly commenced. Everyone got involved, the children learnt about the rules of the game, and they remembered to take turns, a great start to the day.
Suzie quickly followed this fun with some brilliant ice play, absolutely perfect for the weather, this play brought with it so much learning, exploration and beautiful vocabulary. Well done Rising 3s 💫

Our Tots have been very busy planting this week. Firstly our Udeskole lead, Sasha helped them prepare the pots, everyone got to use tools to make the holes for drainage which was super exciting. Then it was time to plant. This was both messy and fun. Everyone had a great time in the sunshine, in nature, thinking about the world around them.🌱🌾 Well done team Tots 👏🏻

Ania created a shape scavenger hunt for our Rising 3s room yesterday! They had to hunt for shapes hidden around the room and put them into the correct space on the floor. They then had to find everyday objects that matched the shapes too! They had a lovely time and worked really hard to get it right. Well done all 😁

A lovely example of In the Moment Planning from our Rising 3's.
After an interest in ice creams last week during the hot weather, the children wanted to make their own using play dough and pompoms.
We used lots of lovely language when we talked about our favourite toppings and flavours as well 'as in the cone', 'on top of the ice cream' and so on. Our gross motor skills were used to scoop and push. We also used our numeracy knowledge to count the different "toppings"

A few weeks ago we planted some lettuce seeds in pre-school. Last week we noticed our lettuce was fully grown and decided to pull some.
We found the roots on the plant and spoke about why they are there and what they do. Then the children decided to do some cooking in the mud kitchen. We had lots of conversations about the need to wash the lettuce before we "cook" it. We found snails , slugs and lots of little bugs, the children told me that they needed to eat the lettuce too. We made lots of things from pies and salad to cakes and Spaghetti Bolognese.
We spoke about lettuce being super healthy and it can help make us big and strong. We even tried some ourselves.
On another day we decided to snip the leaves using good scissor control and then we asked to paint it and see what happened.
Lettuce is such fun!
