From LSFC student to university lecturer and theatre director 🎭✨

Mark Smith studied Theatre Studies, Performing Arts and Communication Studies at Luton Sixth Form College between 1989 to 1992, and has since built an incredible career spanning more than 30 years in the arts industry.

Now a Senior Lecturer in Performance and Production at Liverpool John Moores University, Mark combines academic leadership with directing theatre productions and developing improvised performance across the UK and Europe. He is also the founder and director of the Liverpool Improvisation Festival (LiF), which celebrates its fifth anniversary next year.

Reflecting on his time at LSFC, Mark credits his tutors with inspiring his curiosity and introducing him to challenging and avant-garde performance work that shaped his creative thinking and career path.

His advice to current students? Keep learning, keep adapting and say “yes” to opportunities. Mark is a big believer in lifelong learning, which has led him to complete his PhD in 2023 at the age of 48!

Well done Mark, we are super proud to have you as alumni!

Choosing the right college is about more than grades; it’s about finding a place where your child can thrive and find joy in learning.

We were delighted to be featured by the BBC News for our recent workshop with Laughology Learning and Development
This exciting collaboration shows how learning can be engaging, supportive, and fun. By using laughter and creativity in the classroom, students build confidence, feel more comfortable making mistakes, and remember what they learn more effectively.

This means students benefit from an environment that not only delivers strong academic results but also prioritises wellbeing, resilience, and personal growth, preparing them for success in exams and beyond.

We were delighted to welcome Laughology Learning and Development to Luton Sixth Form College as part of an exciting collaboration featured by BBC NewsNews 🎥

Stephanie Davies from Laughology has been working closely with our students and team, delivering engaging training that blends learning, development and play. Her sessions have had a truly positive impact, supporting confidence, wellbeing and creating a more energised, collaborative environment across both our classrooms and leadership teams.

It was fantastic to see our students getting involved in a workshop that was also captured for the BBC, showcasing the power of learning through laughter.

A huge thank you to Stephanie, Laughology, our students, staff and everyone involved in bringing this opportunity to life 🙌
