Modified, NOT removed

Let’s talk about rice, fufu and plantain, because I’ve been hearing the same thing about all three for quite some time now.

Here’s what’s really going on. These foods were never the problem. The portion size is. That cup of rice isn’t what’s sabotaging your goals, but overdosing on 3 servings without consideration might be the reason.

Fufu isn’t heavy because it’s bad for you, it’s heavy because of the portions we were raised to consume. Like look at what our father and uncles have! And sure plantain has natural sugars but nobody’s cutting out the apples and mangoes that have their sugars.

You don’t need to remove the food you grew up on. You just need to be honest with yourself about the amount that is sitting on your plates and in your bowls. That’s it.

Which one are you avoiding, rest or lazy?

There is a clear difference between rest days and lazy days, and most of us have never actually stopped to think about which one of the two we are actually having.

Rest days are planned (something black women need to start doing more often) your body needed it and you chose it on purpose. Lazy days just happen. (we need to take on more of those too to be fair!) Nothing planned, high key avoiding the things that need doing. But there’s no pressure or guilt required to stop you from being lazy cause it’s okay!

Here’s what people get wrong though. A rest day fills you back up so you have more to give again. Lazy days can drain you further you end up feeling worser.

Remember this, the problem was never having a lazy day every now and then. The problem is when you never let yourself have a proper day of rest to be able to recognise the difference.

Versatility isn’t the opposite of discipline, it’s the highest form of it.

A lot of us grew up in homes where rest was seen as laziness, changing plans was seen as giving up and prioritising your own body was seen as selfish. So we learnt to just push through it instead of adapting- and that is what we ended up calling discipline out of the fear of being called lazy.

You’re allowed to change the plan and still be consistent. You don’t need to earn the right to prioritise yourself.

MYTH BUSTING: The ones Black women STILL hear

The frustrating thing is, I am still hearing some of these today!🙃

It is important to not allow ourselves to be defined, but to stand up in defiance on the expectations to remain small, unseen & unheard.

Which one do you struggle with the most?🤔

Every moment counts when it comes to improving your nutritional habits & it’s easy to make the excuses. But how many excuses are you going to make if you’re trying to break out of an unfulfilling cycle?

What matters most is the consistency you have to break the bad habits and create your own fulfilling cycle for better results!

We love our carbs!!
Traditional meals in both African & Caribbean communities derive close to 60% of their total energy from carbohydrates. Way back when, carbs were heavily relied on to get through the hardworking days but there wasn’t much knowledge on the best way to prepare those staple meals— but we do now. Even though our meals provide us with essential energy— consumed in high quantities have a significant impact on blood sugar levels.

From our yams, cassava & plantain to our rice & peas, dumplings all the way to fufu & sadza— we can find our balance of enjoyment without having to give these up! Modifying & not removed. The swaps we make are the stepping stone to understanding the versatility of our meals and still getting to enjoying them just as much. Simple swaps + growing knowledge = better structure without the guilt.

When you get into the industry or start your fitness journey, it is such an information overload in the beginning. You don’t know what’s legit and what isn’t. You go around in circles of trial and error and feel like you’re not moving towards any progressions.

It was important for me to step away from the noise— doing my own further research and picking the brains of trusted sources to gain full clarity of providing quality within my coaching and focus on that and not just on the quantity I was aiming to reach out to. And this was how it was when it came to cultural foods. I love African & Caribbean cuisine and I was confused for a long time as to why these cuisines were deemed “unhealthy” — by miles not true! We can thrive the same way you would with chicken, broccoli and rice (no shade!)

Honourable mention; if a cute gym set is required to have a solid workout, then have it! But it’s not the basis— wear why you feel your best and comfortable in!
