Lady Zia Wernher School is a Primary Community Special School educating children between the ages of 3 and 11 years who have a wide range of special educational needs. All children attending the school have a cognitive delay; they also have additional needs which include physical disabilities, autistic spectrum condition, medical requirements or a combination of these additional needs. We have hig

h expectations of our children and experienced, creative and skilful staff ensure the children access a rich and varied learning environment, and develop their skills in the key areas of communication, cognition, social skills, life skills and motor skills. A range of strategies are used to support the development of these key skills, for example Makaton signing, PECS, TEACCH, multi-sensory environments, eating programmes, rebound therapy, circuits and educational visits. The core purpose of Lady Zia Wernher School is to enable all the children to enjoy their learning, to make progress and to achieve in every facet of their education. In addition the school endeavours to ensure the children’s achievements are recognised and celebrated by the community in which they live and society in general. The child’s family is fundamental to their progress and successful learning and the core purpose is most effective when the school and families work in partnership, sharing the journey of learning, together. The strength of partnership with our families is a reflection of the strength of the school. If you are considering the school for your child I would be pleased to welcome you for a visit and answer any questions you may have. This website aims to give you a taster of the school, as well as providing regular updated information for parents, carers and families on our class and news pages. We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website, however do contact us if you would like to visit and see the school in action. Thank you for visiting. Mrs Hilary Davies

বাংলা (Bangla) and اردو (Urdu) translations below: Thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent SEMH Coffee Morning. It was wonderful to see so many parents, carers and colleagues from transport come together to share experiences and support. During the session, we explored how anxiety can present in children, emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA), masking, and the connection between anxiety, sleep and emotional wellbeing. We also discussed practical, low-demand strategies to support regulation, communication and bedtime routines, with a focus on helping children feel safe, understood and supported both at home and in school. Thank you again for your engagement, thoughtful questions and valuable contributions. We look forward to seeing you at our next SEMH Coffee Morning.

This year some Upper School pupils have had the privilege of making friends with pupils from Hillborough Junior School as part of The Linking Network.
We have learnt more about who we are as people. We have celebrated our similarities and differences and have enjoyed being included in the wider community of Luton as we have been on visits with our new friends.
