Year 5 art week.
Inspired by Jim Dine, pupils created a bank of effects using watercolours to develop a range of specific marks and techniques for their five paintbrush paintings. They used the outlines of real decorator's brushes as the basis for their work and produced some excellent pieces, demonstrating careful control, creativity, and a strong understanding of watercolour techniques.

In Enquiry this week, Year 5 learnt about the ancient Maya number system. We created numbers using small cubes for ones (the Maya used dots) and lolly sticks for fives (the Maya used lines). The ancient Maya people didn't use ten as their base when counting (like us) - they used twenty, as they counted on their fingers and their toes! A small cube (a Maya dot) placed higher up was used to represent a twenty, with two dots for forty, three for sixty and so on. It was very tricky trying to get our heads around a completely new number system!

This week, Year 1 became scientists, investigating which materials are waterproof. The had to carefully observe the water droplets and see if the material stopped the water from passing through into the cup. Excellent work Year 1!
