One thing schools rarely explain clearly: housing.

For many teachers, school-provided accommodation is actually the better deal — especially in your first year.

Why?
• no large deposits
• no agency fees
• less stress on arrival
• predictable costs
• fewer surprises

Housing allowances sound attractive, but often don’t cover:
• rising rents
• upfront payments
• utilities
• location compromises

There’s no “right” answer — but there is a realistic one.

Understanding this early can save you a lot of money and pressure.

Most teachers underestimate the cost of moving to the UAE.

I regularly see teachers arrive expecting to spend “a little bit” before their first salary.

In reality, most spend £5,000–£10,000 in the first month.

That usually includes:
• visas & documents
• temporary accommodation
• transport
• furniture & essentials
• deposits
• groceries
• delays before the first paycheck

This doesn’t mean the UAE isn’t worth it — it just means it’s front-loaded.

Planning for this upfront removes a huge amount of stress later.

Your job offer is NOT your final approval.

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings for teachers moving to the UAE — especially Abu Dhabi.

You can:
• sign a contract
• book flights
• pack your life
• arrive in the UAE

…and still be rejected at the final stage due to approval systems like ADEK.

It doesn’t mean you’re unqualified.
It doesn’t mean the school lied.
It means the system is strict — and sometimes unforgiving.

This is why preparation (and savings) matter so much.

If you’re moving this year, don’t assume everything is guaranteed until approvals are complete.
