What does active play and movement mean for young children?

Young children experience the world with their whole bodies. Before they can explain their ideas with words, they learn through climbing, balancing, carrying, building and exploring what their bodies can do.

You might notice your child climbing everything in sight, creating obstacle courses, balancing along walls or repeating the same physical challenge again and again. These moments are helping them build confidence, solve problems and discover their own abilities.

Dr Morvwen Duncan breaks down the importance of active play and movement, exploring how physical experiences support children’s development, confidence and understanding of the world around them.

Children don’t move simply because they have energy to burn. Movement is one of the ways they learn. Every jump, climb and balancing act helps children develop coordination, resilience and problem-solving skills.

Supporting active play can be as simple as exploring the outdoors, visiting a park or giving children opportunities to move, create and experiment.

What does imagination and creativity mean for young children?

Imagination is much more than fun. Through pretend play, storytelling and creative expression, children experiment with ideas, explore emotions and make sense of the world around them.

You might notice your child turning the sofa into a pirate ship, a cardboard box into a rocket or the kitchen into a café. These moments of imagination give children the chance to explore different ideas, practise relationships and understand their everyday experiences in their own way.

Dr Morvwen Duncan, Founder of The Lotus Psychology Practice breaks down the importance of imagination and creativity, exploring how children use pretend play, stories and creative thinking to learn, communicate and understand the world around them.

Imaginative play isn’t “just playing”. It helps children develop confidence, problem-solving skills and the ability to explore different possibilities.

One of the best ways to encourage creativity is to join in your child’s play, follow their lead and give them the freedom to create their own ideas.

🍉✨ Taste, explore & create! 🎨
Our toddlers had lots of fun during our fruit-tasting adventure, discovering new colours, textures and flavours. We especially loved exploring dragon fruit and then getting creative with it! 🌈🐉

Using the dragon fruit to make prints, the children created their own colourful masterpieces while developing their sensory skills, curiosity and creativity. 💕🎨

Learning through play, one delicious discovery at a time! 🍓🍊🥭

The preschool children enjoyed exploring body painting, using different colours and patterns to express their creativity and imagination. It was a fun, hands-on sensory experience with plenty of messy play and opportunities to explore. “Art is a place for children to learn to trust their ideas, themselves, and to explore what is possible.”
- MaryAnn F. Kohl

Why do children have such big feelings?

Why can something as small as the wrong colour bowl, leaving the park or putting on shoes lead to such enormous emotions? And why does reasoning seem to disappear just when we need it most?

Join Dr Morvwen Duncan, Lead Clinical Psychologist and Founder of The Lotus Psychology Practice, for a free webinar exploring how children's emotions develop and what parents can do to support them.

Together, we'll explore:

-What emotional regulation is and how it develops.
-What neuroscience tells us about children's brains.
-The importance of co-regulation and secure relationships.
-Practical strategies to support your child in developing their emotional regulation.
-Gain a deeper understanding of what’s happening beneath your child’s big feelings and how connection can help them learn to manage emotions.

We built upon our balance and coordination, developing confidence through climbing, and enjoying those important opportunities to play alongside their peers. Including our staff who had lots of fun 🫶🏻

🪵🧵💿Children explored our loose-parts-inspired activity, allowing their imaginations to run wild. Using open-ended resources, they were encouraged to create, experiment, problem-solve and express their own ideas.

It was wonderful to see how each child used the materials in their own unique way, turning simple resources into imaginative creations.

What does curiosity and discovery mean for young children?

Curiosity is one of the ways children begin to understand the world around them. Through exploring, asking questions and trying things out, children build their knowledge, develop problem-solving skills and make sense of new experiences.
You might notice your child asking endless “why?” questions, stopping to inspect every snail on the walk to nursery, or taking things apart just to see how they work. These moments of exploration are more than just play. They’re helping children build the foundations for thinking, language and learning.

Dr Morvwen Duncan breaks down the importance of curiosity and discovery, exploring how children learn through investigation, experimentation and following their natural desire to find out more.

Remember, curiosity isn’t about having all the answers. One of the best ways to support your child is to be curious alongside them. Try asking, “What do you think?” and explore the answer together.
