Today marks one year of partnership between Loughborough Sport and Army Sport.
Reflecting on this first year, Major General (Retd) Darrell Amison CBE, Chief Executive of Army Sport remarked:
‘The first year of Army Sport’s relationship with Loughborough University has witnessed significant activity including use of Loughborough’s world class sporting facilities by the Army Athletics Association; Army Strongman and Strongwoman; Army Powerlifting Union; Army Cricket Association and the Army Aquatics Union. I’m particularly grateful for Loughborough University’s willingness to host a recent Army Athletics training camp at very short notice following the understandable cancellation of their scheduled camp in Cyprus. The feedback received from athletes was wholly positive. I must also thank the Army’s Land Warfare Centre for delivering medical casualty simulation training to 15 of the University’s sports physios. By so doing, they’ve enhanced Loughborough’s medical response capability.
Visits to Loughborough’s campus have also strengthened relationships between Army Sport executive staff and the Director of Sport’s team at Loughborough. Looking ahead, we envisage further growth in the use of Loughborough’s facilities by our sports teams, and the potential for collaboration on matters of mutual interest such as women in sport and human performance optimisation. Support to coaching and coach development remains another promising area, as does support to Loughborough’s Sports Department leadership team. So, following a successful first year, we have much to build upon and look forward to.’
Louise Gear, Director of Sport at Loughborough University, added:
‘As we mark the first anniversary of this partnership, it’s fantastic to see the British Army increasingly making full use of our campus sporting facilities, and we have enjoyed hosting events such as powerlifting, waterpolo and cricket. What began as a shared vision has developed into a strong, practical relationship. We’re proud of what’s been achieved so far and are excited to build on this solid foundation in the years ahead.’
Thank you to everyone involved in making the first year of this partnership such a success.
