Great to see our new project 'taking the heat out of outdoor play' showcased on the UKRI website for discovery Science projects! working together with Uni of Kent, Brunel and Portsmouth University and several stakeholders.

Yesterday Lars Claussen successfully defended his PhD thesis "Sustainability without compromises: Evaluating the long-term quality of recycled versus virgin polyester sportswear". Congratulations! Examiners were Dr Steve hayes and Dr Tracy Ross. Supervisors Alex Lloyd, George Havenith and Danny Ruiz from adidas. Overall, this thesis has provided a detailed insight into the long-term quality of recycled and virgin polyester sportswear (which was good!) and how best to test for longevity in garments, suggesting alternative methods to the labor intensive wear trial. Also Lars looked at different evaluation scenarions of clothing, from a shop experience to actual exercising in the clothing in short and long term trials. Findings are relevant for the development and marketing of sports clothing.
The thesis should come online in the next month, but some publications are already available (see google scholar).

Last Friday I (GH) had a magnificent day celebrating my (partial) retirement from the university with many of my former PhD students, post docs and direct colleagues. The day was filled with presentations, the obligatory pub stop and a nice evening at our place. It’s amazing to hear how the careers of my PhD students and post docs has taken them in different directions, both geographically and content wise; all doing great work. Looking forward to winding down my uni duties over the next year, writing up mountains of unpublished data (hopefully), and who knows what else. I am sure, science/research /advisory work will remain part of my future! Keep in touch!!

Very happy to have received the 'lifetime achievement award in academic research' from the Charterer Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, at the annual conference this week. I'd like to thank all those I worked with over the years for their contributions to this success!!

Very happy to have won the Bhattacharyya award from the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of our long-standing academia–industry collaboration with adidas. The Loughborough team consisted of our Environmental Ergonomics Research centre, the Sports Technology Institute, Aero-Auto and Sports Science contributions. The prize (25k) will allow a number of activities including outreach work. Congratulations to all involved!!
