More than five decades since their time at Loughborough, a group of alumni who played football together in the 1970s continue to meet on an annual basis.

In 2013, the group came together to celebrate the 80th birthday of their coach, Clive Bond.

The alumni play golf annually, in a north v south battle. 🏌🏻

On Friday evening, alumni gathered in Hanoi, Vietnam 💜

A group of alumni met the Dean of Loughborough Business School, Professor Jan Godsell, for dinner.

It was a lovely opportunity to reconnect and celebrate their connection to Loughborough. The alumni even pulled out some old university stash!

Iain Whitelaw has fond memories of his time as a postgraduate PE student at Loughborough in the mid-1970s.

"Loughborough certainly changed me for the better – made me even more competitive, a more rounded team player, and I was never so proud of representing my university and being proud to be a Loughborough student.

"What did come as a surprise to me was the manner in which we, as students at Loughborough, were treated as talented sportsmen and women by the teaching staff who were there to help us maximise our potential. They were a different class."

"Perhaps sharing my story will secure responses from my fellow students from Loughborough, both those in my PG Certificate of Education in Physical Education year (1976-1977) and beyond."

Gopal Suri (Sport Business and Leadership MSc, 2021) has been named on the International Sports Convention (ISC) 30 Under Thirty list. Gopal is a data analyst at Publicis Sport & Entertainment. 👏

Gopal studied at Loughborough University London. He said:

"The course played a really important role in preparing me for the kind of work I do today. One of the biggest things I took from the course was the way the assessments were structured."

He has built the tools and models that some of the biggest brands in sport use to decide where their money goes. His clients include UEFA, the International Olympic Committee, FIFA, the Premier League, Formula 1 and MotoGP, as well as major global brands including AB InBev, Samsung, Stellantis, Visa, and Ralph Lauren.

Dr Stavros X. Drakopoulos (Materials Engineering PhD, 2019) has been named as one of the Future Faculty Honorees, class of 2026, by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering (PMSE).

Dr Drakopoulos is an Associate Research Scholar at Princeton University specialising in polymer physics. 👏
