ROLLER DERBY
Wanna try something different? Try Roller Derby it’s a fast pace exciting sport. It’s full of contact and competition 💪🏼 Fancy it? Why not try and make a society or join Nottingham below!
Info:

Nottingham Roller Derby | Nottingham Roller Derby We're Nottingham Roller Derby, a roller derby club in Nottingham with a women's team: Nottingham Roller Girls, and a men's team: Super Smash Brollers.

You need strong arms, not smooth arms, on a sports field." Oh Sana Mir, former Pakistan cricket captain, you are the very definition of a Shero.🙌
🏏
In a wide ranging blog, Mir has condemned a hair removal product aimed at women in India and Pakistan, and seemingly using a basketball court as a setting to promote their product. Business using women's sport to oppress, objectify and body shame women? What fresh hell is this?!👹
🏏
Thankfully Mir has boldly spoken out, not only condemning the product and its campaign, but revealing that in 12 years on the national team she has consistently turned down beauty product endorsements (and bear in mind we're talking women's sport here, hardly awash with financial options) because she wants women and girls to know that their sporting talent - not their appearance - is all that matters. She also cited shadism, another really important conversation when we think about the prevalence of skin bleaching creams and light skin privilege.💄💅🏻🤦‍♀️
🏏
For women in sport, body hair and femininity is not merely an aesthetic issue. It is highly political and ultimately can affect your career. Up until 2015 the global athletics governing body, IAAF, were using a visual body hair chart, devised by two white male doctors in the 1960s, as part of a decision making process about whether to perform invasive gender tests with the ultimate outcome of potentially being disqualified from competitive sport. (I'll post the chart and more detail in a separate post). The chart has since been ruled ineligible by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but the fight for women to compete continues.💪
🏏
"I want young girls with a passion for sports to know that all they need for a practice session are the will to succeed, comfortable shoes and clothes, a water bottle and a cap if it’s hot." Thank you Sana. 🙏

SUPPORT YOUR WOMEN💜
Loughborough Students Women's RFC take on Calgary this Monday! Make sure you head down to support!

How can you tell a "real woman"? Check her body hair. How often does she shave or wax? How hairy are her arms, her back, her upper lip?🤔
🏃🏾‍♀️
These questions are perverse, right? Archaic, oppressive, racist, misogynistic. Yep. ☑️
🏃🏾‍♀️
Incredibly, up until 2015 the chart pictured was used by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in an appendix as part of determining who was "woman" enough to compete. (It was not the main scientific criteria but the fact it was even included says where this policy was coming from in terms of gender/racialise approach.) Athletes such as Caster Semenya and Dutee Chand, famously fell foul of the s*x testers, and were forced to take hormones, or disqualified.❌
🏃🏿‍♀️
Sprinter Dutee Chand bravely took them to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) and won. The ruling was suspended. But guess what? This week the IAAF are back, with a whole new box of tricks. A loophole in the system means they can introduce a new rule to discriminate against women and unless your specific event is affected, you can't make a legal challenge. So Dutee, as a 100m specialist, is ineligible to fight a law that affects 400, 800 and 1500m runners.⛔️
🏃🏿‍♀️
No, wait. It gets worse. The IAAF's own research says that the events most affected by elevated testosterone are hammer and pole vault. But these events don't have bans. The 1500m is not affected. But is banned. 🤔
🏃🏿‍♀️
But how could that be, you ask? I don't know. Could it have something to do with multiple Olympic and world champion Caster Semenya specialising in 800/1500m? 🤷🏾‍♀️
🏃🏿‍♀️
Don't worry though. She can just have hormonal treatment (with untested long term effects on an otherwise healthy human being), and vaginal surgery (described by UN as a form of FGM). Then she is free to compete and win medals.🥇
🏃🏾‍♀️
Today the South African government have called this what it is. A racist policy. Women of colour from the global south have been disproportionately affected by the IAAF's rules on hyperandrogenism, in no small part because of its racialised western centric view of female aesthetics. 🏃🏾‍♀️
