Part 2: Here is my (simple) 5 step process to planning your training program like a pro athlete 🏃🏼‍♀️💨💨💨

Ambition - what do you want to achieve? This could be running a marathon in under the 4-hour mark in April next year, doing a 10km in under 60 minutes by xmas. Be specific.

Determinants – what’s it going to take? This could be technical things like what pace is it going to take to achieve your goal. Or non-technical aspects like number of runs per week. This is where you need to think of everything that will allow you to Own The Start Line.

Assess - where you are currently in your training and performance, technical and non-technical, relative to what it is going to take. If you think it will take 2 sessions and a long run a week and you’re not there yet, then you need to make a plan to get there.

Process - what is likely to have the biggest impact on your performance, and consequently, what order you should do things in? I recommend using the 80/20 rule. There may be lots of little things that may sound good but will probably not have a big impact on performance. Go after the big rocks!

Team – who is on your team, who is rooting for you? Whether it is your coach, spouse or partner, running mate, parents, therapist, or close friend, put them in to the plan.

With all these components identified, you can now write out your training plan, whether it focuses on overall fitness, mental and emotional conditioning, or holistic training. Go get it!

Is it Nature or Nurture that is most important for success?

I believe it is neither. It is nature multiplied by nurture, that is, your Talent X Environment.

Or in the real world, Talent X Environment X Mindset.

For example, we all know those people that have amazing talent but don’t have the motivation and conversely we all know those people that have loads of motivation but don’t have the talent! The key ingredient to making it happen though is your mindset.

The people who achieve DECIDE they are going to be successful. So whatever talent or environment you have around you, you can be the best you can be by making some good choices.

Decide to work hard, decide to train hard, decide to study hard, decide who you hang out with, decide what you eat, decide when you go to bed. You decide. You choose.
