Shout out to my PDA families!!
I want you to know that I get it. Deeply.
Even if your kid seems happy to come to the club, I know there’s a hidden cost.
They’re pulling out all the stops to make it work because they want to be there, even if it means they crash later on.
And I know about all the work and preparation needed, by you and your child, to get them there in the first place.
I want you to know, even when they’re happily playing, that their peace is never taken for granted. It’s not an invitation to introduce demands.
Just because they’ve played happily for two hours doesn’t mean they can suddenly agree to help with the tidying up or tolerate seeing their builds be broken back into the box.
So if you need to leave in a hurry, please do, I get it. No explanation needed.
I love it when kids do help tidy up because I love that feeling of shared responsibility, belonging and community. This is THEIR club too and they’re helping to make it work.
But if it’s too much, don’t panic. Quit while you’re ahead!
I will always make the kindest assumption.
- a child doesn’t say ‘thank you’? No worries. I know it’s because, in that moment, they can’t. Not because they’re ungrateful.
- a family leaves without helping tidy up? No worries. I know that when it’s time to go, it’s time to go. Not because they don’t care.
- a child gets noisily upset about leaving? No worries, take your time, I REALLY get this one. I know you’re a wonderful parent, and believe me when I tell you there’s no judgement.
If all of this means that occasionally, a capable, uncaring family gets away with it? Well I can live with that. There’s clearly something else going on that I don’t need to know about.
And that’s the cost of making Go Build Club the one place that PDA kids can feel at home, then so be it.
I know what’s important, and this is it.
