When a child is born, so is a mother 🤱 Matrescence is a word that refers to the physical, psychological, emotional and social transformation and identity shift that is motherhood! it mirrors adolescence in many ways, as it involves navigating unfamiliar territory and adapting to a new role and sense of self. As you transition into motherhood, you may feel your previous identity shifting. You are now navigating the space between who you were and who you are becoming. This may feel challenging. Your intimate relationships may also shift and alter, as your roles and responsibilities change drastically. This might lead to a sense of uncertainty and a desire to redefine yourself. You may feel overwhelmed with big questions, asking yourself… What is important to me now? What do I want in life? Matrescence also brings with it new joy and fulfilment, as you become the centre of your child's world, and form an incomparable bond. A feeling that you are right where you need to be. The experience of matrescence can be experienced as both expansion and contraction, loss and gain 🍃 I feel we must have open discussions about the highs and lows of matrescence, and whether directly or indirectly, these discussions are a huge part of the postnatal care that I offer, as I believe these open conversations nurture a mother’s self trust and sense of belonging in their new role 💫
