At Kumon Long Eaton we have six class sessions a week at West Park Leisure Centre (after school on Tuesdays and Fridays, and on Saturday mornings), and at least two online sessions. You can choose the mixture of classes that suits you, but the Programmes achieve the best progress because of the fully individualised and structured daily study. Kumon students are encouraged from the beginning to develop their ability to self-learn. This means learning from examples, thinking for themselves and seeing the small incremental steps that build through the questions, allowing them to work out the answers for themselves. Through this independent learning approach, their learning will be more memorable, their sense of achievement will be more powerful and the pride they find in their work becomes motivational.

Why should we encourage independent learning in our children? Consider the skills and attributes a child will need to be successful. Are we equipping them with the skills to be able to learn for themselves?

When lockdown first began in March 2020, I felt sure we'd be back to normal by September 2020. Another year on, some students are still missing school. We all hope for a good summer break and a fresh start in the autumn, but at Kumon we recommend, from experience, that continuing with a little practice every day keeps the skills fresh and the progress active. This gives our students an advantage and prepares them for the new school year. If you have concerns about the impact of COVID learning loss on your child, talk to us about how we can start to fill those gaps through July and August, and then work with them through their next school year.
