We took a road trip down south for a few days so we could go to FOTA Island Wildlife Park. We had been several year ago before the boys were born so it was great to bring them. It is a lovely zoo with lots of great animals to see. They have recently had a bit of a baby boom and have a baby rhino, three lion cubs and two tiger cubs as well as other babies. We went to several of the talks and feeding times and had a great day out. There are lovely smooth paths and it is mostly flat the whole way round. There are disabled toilets and baby changing (no changing places toilets though) and it was very accessible with a pram. We spent nearly 5 hours there and one of the highlights was the cheetah feeding time with the food being sent out on a zip line for the cheetahs to catch.

M O T H S

We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to borrow a large moth trap over the summer. We had a lot of fun setting it and seeing what moths we have around the trees at our house. We got some very cool ones including the Poplar Hawk, Magpie and Green Carpet Moths. After looking at and taking photos of the moths they were all safely released again. Moths come in all cool shapes, colours and sizes which we rarely get to see because they are out at night so I’m very glad we got to use the moth trap and discover more about them. Both boys really enjoyed getting to hold the moths and it was very exciting waking up to see what was in the trap each morning.

C & J ‘ S A N I M A L P A R K

A little less well known probably, but a hidden Jem for animal loving children. C&J's Animal Park near Portadown is a mini zoo with animals such as a crocodile, lemurs, silver foxes and wallabies as well as lots of farm animals and birds. The paths are all flat and gravel, which is accessible but a bit hard to push a pram/wheelchair around. They do have ramps into the shop, toilets and reptiles house making it easy to get in and out. The highlight was getting hands on experience with lots of the animals. The staff were great at getting the reptiles and smalls pets out for us to hold. We got lots of time with each animals they chatted to us about where they got them and how old they were. I was also pleased they recognised and made sure our youngest got to also hold and touch lots of the animals in his own time. We had a lovely morning there and will definitely be back again.
