The Derry Walls The Friends of the Derry Walls is a local charitable organisation, helping local people to engage with the heritage of our walled town and the island of Derry.

Join us! The Derry Walls is the largest ancient monument in state care in Northern Ireland and claims the most intact circuit of ramparts of any of the surviving town walls in Ireland. Walls400 is a programme of activities that celebrate the 400th anniversary of the City Walls. Started in 2013, Walls400 explores the contested history that the City Walls represent and celebrates them as a present-d

ay, national heritage asset, with the potential to unite rather than separate people. Every year until 2019 we host a series of events so stay tuned!

Garvin Kerr loves to be on Derry’s walls first thing in the morning.

“When you’re up here in the morning, you’re away on your own,” he says.

“It’s the quiet. You can reflect and just take a breath.

A real treat for you today. Back in 2018 our late colleague and friend Mark Lusby commissioned artist Jonathan O’Donoghue to create the most accurate depiction of Derry as it would have been in the 16th century using maps and accounts from that time, as well as technical direction from several historians. Jonathan later produced a wonderful picture.

Jump forward to today, and recently we were contacted by and was asked for permission to bring this fabulous picture to life! This Al artwork was created by carefully studying the original Derry Wall’s painting and focusing on its most distinctive details. The aim was to capture the spirit and character of the original piece, a process that involved far-more refinement and attention to detail than many people realise. The video gives, for the first time, a glimpse of what Derry may actually have been like, bringing the ancient city to life. For more videos, check out his tiktok page. It's lovely to see that at the end of the video there is a tribute to Mark.

A reminder to that the original print is available to buy at Visit Derry's visitor centre at Waterloo Place, Verbal Arts Centre and on our website under Shop. Enjoy
