Also one to one coaching for principal s and senior leaders with a new cohort coming on board shortly. Then there is the whole scenario of Performance Review, that I am particularly interested in My recent paper has attracted definite responses and is available to anyone interested

Principal job Isolation

One of the biggest problems principals are facing at present is job isolation. This is coming through time and tome again in coaching sessions. I feel this could be easily addressed by setting up regular face to face get togethers for principals where they could meet and share job related discussions. If face to face seems too difficult or challenging then online could/should also be considered. Some will argue principals could do this for themselves. but systemic involvement would greatly enhance this .

Resilience & Wellbeing of school staff

Have the privilege of working with Stranmillis College on both their PQL and PG Certificate in Education (Leading Skills)
Working with 70+ postgraduate teachers as they continue their professional development in Leadership.
I am in awe of these people who despite the ever increasing challenges they are facing in their daily work, make the time and summon up the effort to engage in personal development.
Our Department of Education and relevant statutory bodies such as EA and CCMS are beginning to recognise the importance of this work and that is to be welcomed, but more needs to be done in terms of time allocation/financial assistance and general support and recognition of these developments.
After all what is more important than staff development if we are to provide better provision for our pupils and students?
It is an absolute pleasure to be afforded the opportunity to work with the college, their staff and with these teachers as theyn continue their journey in leadership
Lets at least recognise the effort they are making

You-Me and the Pandemic
Been doing a lot of work recently on three fronts in relation to the above
1 I have been fortunate enough to be working with EA and Inspire delivering to schools "The resilience Repair Shop" --a 2 hour Zoom session where i am delivering to 31 schools. Feedback has been very positive with some schools looking for follow-up sessions
2 Coaching
Principals are finding it difficult and stressful this term trying to normalise school life when we are far from out of the pandemic. Sessions have been intense both in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and it is a privilege to be able to assist these good people navigate their way forward. Again feedback is very positive
3 Creating positive attitudes
Some schools have been in touch to ask for presentations around this subject. It is really refreshing to work with staff both teaching and non-teaching as they turn their minds away from the challenges and stresses of the past 18-20 months and reflecting on themselves and the attributes they bring to the job they are doing. Not only has it helped them but it has also been of great emotional benefit to myself. This is an area when we need to work seriously and give a lot more attention to.
There is a lot of wellbeing and mental health work still in need of addressing

Team Coaching
Completed what I think is my last team coaching session for this term. A real learning experience for me but one that I have found extremely enjoyable. Participating schools have found it challenging: so have I, but I am certain of the benefits in spite of the demanding circumstances we had had to work under. I am hopeful that we may be able to offer a more blended approach next term in terms of online and face to face. All of the present schools have agreed to continue next term and already four more have asked about availability and provisional dates have been pencilled in.
Any school interested in finding out more please get in touch and I will send a copy of my latest article”Team Coaching..A case for re-evaluating the role of leadership teams”

After a great final coaching session this afternoon I was reminded of this picture. Growth very often demands courage and I was immediately conscious of the courage this principal has shown in implementing necessary changes in their school.Recognising the need for change while essential in leadership does not in any way guarantee it’s implementation...it needs action and that demands courage. Coaching raises awareness of what needs to happen, but only action on the part of the coaches leads to change. It is very gratifying to see this as a coach: to see that limiting assumptions, rumination and personal vulnerability have been overcome and been replaced by satisfaction, sense of achievement and change has been initiated. Leadership confidence has been strengthened, resilience built upon and new skills acquired. Well done!
