Can yoga philosophy be taught without words? 🤐

In the 1960s, B.K.S. Iyengar trained teachers in London, where classes were offered with government funding. There was only one condition – they had to be presented as a workout.

The Inner London Education Authority granted approval “provided that instruction is confined to ‘asanas’ and ‘pranayamas’ (postures and breathing disciplines) and does not extend to the philosophy of Yoga." Instead, the practice should be “a means of keeping fit.”

Iyengar consented, reflecting later: “Better life can be taught without using religious words. Meditation is of two types, active and passive. I took the active side of meditation by making students totally absorbed in the poses.”

Although he bombarded them with detailed instructions on physical actions, he said this was training that silenced the mind.

As he put it in The Tree of Yoga: “I teach externally, but in doing so I am keeping your internal organs in a state of single-pointed awareness for four hours at a stretch.”

How else might ideas be expressed through embodied techniques?
