What does it take to govern a city of 9 million people? 🇬🇧

Yesterday, over 45 aspiring lawyers found out first-hand at ‘The Law Behind London’, our session inside City Hall!

The afternoon began with how London is actually run, from the London County Council to today’s Greater London Authority. Students were quick to ask how the different levels of power fit together, and stepping into the Assembly Chamber, where the Mayor and Assembly Members hold their debates, brought it all to life. 🏛️

Looking back through London’s history, the group explored how often change is driven by crisis. The Great Stink led to the sewer system the city still relies on, while the Great Fire reshaped how London was rebuilt, sparking great discussion about how today’s challenges might shape tomorrow’s laws.

Conversation really picked up as we turned to London’s economy, from the Royal Docks regeneration and Google’s move to King’s Cross, to Crossrail, once Europe’s biggest infrastructure project. When it came to live debates like pedestrianising Oxford Street, students confidently shared their views and weighed up the legal and commercial consequences. 💷

We then ended the day on the London Cable Car, seeing the very regeneration we’d discussed from above!

For aspiring lawyers, understanding how regulation, investment and policy shape a global city is key to strong commercial awareness, and seeing everyone grow in confidence was the highlight of the day!

We’re excited to announce ‘The Law Behind London’, an exclusive session inside City Hall itself!

This is your chance to go behind the scenes of how London is actually governed, learning about the city’s history and its place on the national and global stage, understanding the role of the Greater London Authority, the Mayor of London and the London Assembly, and exploring different political viewpoints and the importance of voting. 🇬🇧

Along the way, you’ll take part in interactive discussions and activities, and see how current issues shape policy-making in the capital — potentially finishing with a trip on the London Cable Car! 🚡

Whether you’re looking to strengthen your commercial and political awareness, build confidence in political discussions, or simply understand how a global city works, this session will give you a rare, behind-the-scenes perspective.

We welcome aspiring lawyers at every stage of their journey, including Year 12 and 13 students, gap year students, university students and beyond.
